In my opinion, if you are going to write a crime story, then you have a moral obligation to conclude that crime does not pay. The article concludes that crime is an exciting adventure! Ridiculous!

Today, in the USA, dealing marijuana is a crime. Making a (highly profitable) living off dealing marijuana is, at the very least, a "career of crime".
The individuals in this story did much more than deal in marijuana - they set up a business, made huge amounts of money, wasted it, acted irresponsibly, and were finally caught. Furthermore, they celebrated their exploits. The point isn't that dealing marijuana is crime, the point is that no light has penetrated the thick skulls of these young men. It seems to me that it is possible but unlikely that they will come to see the error of their ways.
A fascinating story, but singularly disheartening. One of the main characters regrets nothing of leading a life of crime, and the author is willing to give him the final say. This is moral laxity. He plays up the drama to the point where the story is entertainment, and therefore transmits nothing.
Let me write my own end then: some people will never regret their evil actions, even if they are caught. These people should be avoided because ruin travels closely on their heels.
I like this sentence because it suggests a guilt-by-association argument. However, you would have to be living under a rock to not notice that individual rights in the USA are gone, and they aren't coming back.
This is simply not true. I work for a major internet company that has millions of users. We use SQL for all of our data (images and SWFs excepted, of course). We do all logging to SQL tables. We use key-value cache servers for hot, non-relational data, but we don't have a lot of that.
We built most of our data center with cheap hardware. It is quite possible that we splurged on a load balancer and some other funky networking gadgets; I don't know. We did, however build quite a lot of custom software to abstract away the fact that we have split our data among dozens of machines. This is essentially the work of two people (one hardware, one software). Finding the people who can build such a system is difficult, to put it mildly, but once you find them, you don't need deep pockets.
Reddit is another example of a site that runs on SQL. Part of the problem with the "SQL won't scale" argument is that essentially all of the live queries function like key-value lookups (or lookups against a very small number of rows). If you're tempted to do something insane like service a request with a join, then you're doing it wrong and you need to cache.
Lookups by index will have the same performance characteristics no matter what. It doesn't matter if you're using a Python dict, an index in MySQL, or a key-value store.

I must say, I have a taste for this sort of drama. I seek it out, enjoy reading it. I enjoy the fact that people, like this elptacek, willingly make fools of themselves online for the amusement of others. I watch with rapt attention the springs of a tightly wound life pop off when the tension gets too high. My interest in the subject is that of a scientist observing some remarkable natural phenomenon. It appears to follow a pattern which he can, perhaps, predict but not yet quite articulate.
The arguments have been laid out elsewhere, so let me summarize:
1. The memory requirements are massive
2. The chosen approach is substantially more complex than CPython
3. The claimed performance improvements have not been demonstrated
But much worse than all of these, it shows that the future of Python 3 is in the hands of Google managers, not an independent project leader.
I'm pretty confident that this is the nail in Python 3's coffin. It just shows how out-of-touch GvR and Google are with Python users. For a while, Python 3 was on a track to becoming a more mature language, but this is a huge step backwards. Politics at Google have ruined the future of Python 3. In contrast, Python 2.x just keeps on getting better and better.
