Just used it the other day while I was back-country hiking. Set some markers for some landmarks and calculated hiking distance/duration between them. CoMaps is awesome! It's also the reason I contributed to OpenStreetMaps for the first time a while ago, contributing the name of a landmark/structure up in a local mountain.

Right, that was a rhetorical question, highlighting the fact that such an occurrence is even possible, to such a degree of incidence that I know multiple people who have experienced it. Meanwhile, never once heard an anecdote about a MacOS update (though I can imagine it has happened to someone out there, just never heard about it-- in contrast to numerous news articles about Windows' frequently-destructive updates)

Coincidentally just had this realization last night. Leaned a piece of furniture against the wall, realized the ~perfectly straight/level edge didn't lean smoothly against the wall -- the wall is not perfectly straight!! :-O

Completely agreed. Even for people who are like "I have nothing to hide", the only people who think this way are simply unaware of just how much harm can come to them without the protection of privacy (and laws that ensure this)... or they just have no self-preservation instinct, I guess?

Whoa nice, that's nuts. Curious what country if you don't mind sharing! No worries if not

"macOS" (or however they spell it now) is pretty bad, but I'm not sure it's possible Apple could ever possibly produce an OS as bad as Windows 11 lol, it's really surprising to me to see someone suggest it's somehow actually worse?! How many times has an Apple OS wiped your hard drive or otherwise been completely borked from a forced update? I know multiple people personally who have experienced this with Windows 10/11, not once with a Mac. Just that alone is like the end of the argument for me, ignoring all the shockingly brutal UI problems.

I wonder if that's why there is such a good selection of 128gb M5 MBP's on the Apple Certified Refurbished store lol https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/refurbished/mac/macbook-pro-12...

Nice. Submitted a few sites to bolster the "small hand-made personal sites" quotient a bit (all made by Canadian ppl fwiw) :)

The fastest I could find is the G4 "MDD" tower: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powerma... ... Though the 800mhz iMac G4 is a nice alternative (which I happen to have): https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_800_17_fp... Makes for a great Mac gaming machine since it is pretty fast, looks great, is a fully self-contained computer with display, and can run both OS 9 and OS X.

Looks like the most truly-OP upgrade you could do is a dual-1.8ghz G4 upgrade card which is kind of crazy to consider: https://www.sonnettech.com/publicfiles/pdfs/pdf_datasheets/d...

Depends which CPU module you get, but yeah it's not nearly as powerful as the new Steam Machine, surely. I mean, it's a step in the right direction and you can see people are playing many recent-ish (or lower-GPU-intensity) games, as discussed in this thread: https://community.mnt.re/t/mnt-reform-gaming-thread/608/110

Yeah, it's crazy, I haven't had a transmissible illness since 2020. It has been pretty awesome for sure.

In a nutshell, not wanting to risk my entire future due to organ damage from repeated COVID infection (especially my brain of course, since I'm a programmer by trade and my livelihood and everything I've worked towards depends on my sharpness/etc.)... Family member died from a COVID infection. Another family member developed a heart arrhythmia immediately following "asymptomatic" COVID infection. Family friend's mom died from it. Coworker's sister disabled due to it, can no longer work, gets winded just walking to the kitchen. One of my favorite musicians called it quits completely because she went deaf in one ear from it. I could share anecdotes like these all day, it's not like a rare thing but shockingly common that people have serious issues from this.

Most of the time wearing a mask has no ill effect (particularly in stores or whatever), but it does get super old that it's an uphill battle with pretty much everyone everywhere, because for them everything is "back to normal". I don't care if I have to sit there in the restaurant and not eat anything while everyone else eats, but other people find it awkward and make constant comments about it -- or I just don't get invited to stuff too. (As an aside, it's frustrating that restaurants with outdoor patios often aren't much help, because apparently the trend is that outdoor patios have to be completely enclosed in plexiglass thus defeating the purpose of an outdoor patio) ...

It has been a pretty interesting 6 years, noting how people respond to the masking. I think people just think we're ill, pretty often. I've had a few people give a judgemental look, especially in Europe. No one has really said anything out loud, surprisingly.

What's especially surprising is just how inconsiderate people are -- going to work (or just being out in public) while blatantly sick, spreading their illness to others, never wearing a mask because apparently that's too hard or something. Too bad for anyone who's immune-compromised or lives with immune-compromised people, I guess. The pandemic has really opened my eyes to just how selfish people are, and it has been very disappointing to see. It has also highlighted the degree of consideration and thoughtfulness many people enact, which is super awesome to see!

As someone who still masks (KN95) in all indoor settings where unmasked people are present, I am all for this. Very much looking forward to seeing where it leads.

The MNT Station, currently in development, could very well be a fully-OSHW "Steam Machine": https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt-research/mnt-station

So awesome. If I needed/wanted a gaming PC or "family TV" gaming machine, I'd snag this for sure. I've had the Steam Deck since launch and it's really quite well-executed and I've logged hundreds of hours on it. SteamOS is totally decent and the level of polish has been continually improved. The price for the Machine is totally acceptable considering the market currently, particularly considering these [0][1][2] would be my options if I had $1500 CAD to spend on a gaming PC right now -- all machines with 8gb VRAM GPUs and 16GB of RAM.

They're humans playing games, so yeah it's a realistic representation. Anyone can be a gamer.

Oh what the heck? That's super cool! Awesome idea. Possible future enhancement: some basic day/night (or even weather?) design elements that match the timezone of the person whose site it is? Still, doesn't even need it, it's really cool as-is!

I could see it being used as some avenue for saying toxic stuff, so I'm suddenly feeling like the only allowed actions should be ones that can never be harmful (like text interactions are just choosing from a pre-set list)..
