I suppose that could make sense. It's still rather unfortunate, as this is a concerning development that could probably use some more awareness around it.

I don't understand how this thread went from something like #10 on the main page down to #186 in a matter of an hour, despite being more active than most of the threads it is competing with. Can someone more familiar with HN rankings explain this one to me?

Is this a Peter Thiel smurf account or something? I'm going to disengage from you and whatever brand of twisted sychophantic (re: "envious") proselytism this is, now. It's boring and certainly not engendering any support for your cause. Quite the opposite. Maybe you should try to post even less, as it would do more for your cause.

I've met a few and they have all been solely focused on maximizing their wealth with little consideration for the second+ order effects. It's anecdotal, but I'll take first hand information over self-serving comms-fodder.

Speaking of comments, I've seen yours on here. So much hate; so much toxicity. What exactly are you contributing here beyond discord? Maybe get your own demons in check and stop projecting.

You know nothing about me, yet you assume everything. I think having that much money is egregious and I am certainly not envious of people who have an endless void to fill, let alone those who aspire to be like such people. My life is quite full, thank you very much.

I think it's a bit ridiculous that these individuals feel the compulsion to min-max their capital at the expense of pursuits that could better be fueled by it, specifically for the collective good. I think it is shameful behavior and not something we should be promoting in society.

I believe an upset to Altman and a re-characterization of OpenAI to a charitable stance would have left investors scrambling, and would likely have hastened an unwinding of the AI bubble to some degree. It feels like we'll be on this merry-go-round a good deal longer now.

Since the negative PR effects of exploding planes undermine the intended positive promotional aspects of conducting air shows, we should probably just halt and save money, right?

I spent several years living in Mississippi. As someone who was fairly introverted upon arriving in the Deep South, I had that hammered out me pretty quickly, during every opportunity for social interaction. It's just part of the culture to engage. I think my time in that area was a bit of a mixed bag, but that one change was for the better, and it has led to wealth of relationships since. Most people yearn for some bit of connection, and it's not that difficult to be the catalyst.

This is a huge deal. Why is it not being discussed on here?

This is what sophisticated corporate welfare and wealth transfer looks like I guess.

i just finished Children of Time and found it to be incredibly rewarding. However, I think I prefer Shroud if I were to pick a favorite of Adrian Tchaikovsky. I think he did a very capable job of crystallizing the concept of an alien intelligence that has evolved in a environmental substrate completely foreign to our own. It was very refreshing. If you haven't read this work of his, I highly recommend it.

If your lock is one of the most common 90% of consumer pin tumbler locks, you can just avoid all this complexity and bump key them instead.

I remember this driver and relied on it for a few years. Was sort of amazing, all things considered.

I have loathed Larry Summers since the repeal of Glass-Steagall. He has consistently treated the American public like he treats women in the Epstein emails. So glad he's finally getting his comeuppance.

Yes, yes ... It's the same as it ever was, only so much more so!

Beyond just critiquing the disparity here, I feel like the psychology that treats capital in such a frivolous way, shifting it about already privileged pockets of society, rather than apply it to any sort of material good is rather abhorrent. That's just my take.

The next product Apple will unveil will be an iPhone case made of human fingernails from those who have tried to climb this K-shaped economic ladder and failed. It'll be a steal at only $500 a pop.

I am wondering what you call consumption that feeds $499 designer margins on polyester like that, while so many people can barely afford to scrape by day to day.
