Probably running some point of sale, ATM or industrial machines where it isn't cost effective to upgrade. However, they are likely running super-customized versions of it. End users are likely running it in a VM.
I have a "full cave" card and about 100 post-certification cave dives. I have been actively ocean diving and even doing wreck diving, which are overhead environments, but I haven't been in a cave in 10 years. I still likely take a refresher/checkout course to polish my skills with an instructor just to be safe if I wanted to cave dive again. Your instincts are what can kill you in a cave diving.
But it's worth it, you visit places that few people have seen with their own eye and it's safe if you follow the rules.
Cave Diver here who's had a lot of dives in that area of Mexico. There is a site call Chan Hol we dove, it has a human skelton/burial site about a 30 min swim in and numerous fire pits. You can make out black marks on the wall/ceiling and remains of the pit itself. They are all over this one cave, it was very active.
The human skeleton is in what could only be called a burial site, it's very high limestone slab, above what would have been the floor and could have been only been placed there when the water table was much lower. The amount of effort suggests a coordinated effort but it's debatable, not all the skeleton is there.
A team of Mexican scientist radio-carbon dated the sites and the conclusion is 11,000 years ago. The body being an adult female.
I know this was posted due to the Thai cave rescue but what is discussed in this manual and what they are doing are different. Exley wrote this because scuba divers, some even experienced cave divers, were dying in cave diving accidents and landowners in Florida were closing caves or banning diving. This blueprint is more accident/incident analysis than training material. It was required reading when I got cave trained ~17 years ago.
The Thai rescue will use some of these techniques but it's whole different set of challenges they have to deal with; being in a silt out with an untrained person who hasn't eaten or slept much for almost two weeks
Sadly Exley died a few years later trying to get into the record books for "deepest cave dive" which goes again "Going too deep"
We use Square, using a 6 year old iPad and the first "stand" they made. It works great. We also use it to pull up the website, control music and Chrome-cast videos. We do this maybe 1-2x a year. But it still is multi-purpose.
I looked into this new stand but the customer signature screen sucks and you can't install anything else on it.
I've used google wallet for years and basically came to the conclusion, that outside of novelty, it doesn't offer any benefits over a card. And it's often faster to just use my card than to pull my phone out, unlock it, make sure the app opens and the reader/phone do their connection thing.
As a partner in a small business, who uses a service like square, adding mobile payments is something we'd like to do but we aren't buying hardware to support it, it makes no business sense.
