I lived in San Fran back in 2012 for 6 months. I personally didn't feel unsafe; I'm a big guy and have a physical presence so I understand why others may feel unsafe.

So why did I leave?

There were a few events that really upset me. 1) I almost stepped on a shit snake some human left outside my building. 2) A homeless person stopped in front of a mother and child to urinate. 3) The weather sucked; cold and hot.

I went there for the tech scene, but it was just too dirty for me to want to live there.

Perhaps you're too ignorant to step out of emotions with politics and focus on the question. Sorry for thinking you might have common sense :)

I find it very interesting that people can't put aside political views and speak about whether or not having a consumption tax, in their opinion, is a good or bad idea when compared to the current system.

This question isn't about a persons view of Biden or Trump.

I think kstenerud did a great job at expressing their views without having to speak about politics.

Is this an indicator at how toxic social media has become and how people have become addicted to arguing vs. having a discussion?

I was thinking about how a consumption tax aka Fair Tax does have some benefits, but in the case that kstenerud pointed out, depending on the percentage of the tax, it could hurt the poor. For instance, if a gallon of milk now goes for $20, it's going to hurt the lower class.

I do agree with kstenerud that such a tax could hurt the poorest people. This begs the question of is there a way to introduce such a tax that allows the poor to transition into a Fair Tax? e.g., Allowing people making under X 2 years not to pay any income taxes?

Hopefully those of you with strong political opinions take it easy on this thread because honestly, it's like the smell of your own shit... no one really wants to sniff it ;)

Something tells me that you love to critique things to hear yourself speak before actually answering a question.

P.S. it's spelled "paycheck" not "pay check". ;)

First, seek professional help even if it's remote. Suicide is never a good answer. In fact, it would just hurt those you love about deeply.

Second, the best of your life isn't behind you because you're 43. I say this with 100% certainty because I'm your age. Remember, the meaning of life, the universe, and everything is 42 and that was just last year. That's right baby, nerd joke!

Immutability is great for programming, but not as life advice. You can change, the biggest challenge starts with changing your mindset. I know that's hard and requires a) consistent affirmation in know your worth and ability. b) it takes time, but fighting and pushing for growth is the meaning of life. c) You're the same person you were as a youth, but you're lying to yourself about self-worth.

It's not that you don't want to live, it's that you don't want to continue with your behavior and mindset; but you're uncertain of how to start the cycle of change.

Here's what I do daily.

1. Wake up - get washed, vitamins, eat plant based, kefir, scrub my balls until they shine. 2. Work - On my own projects, work for my client, etc 3. Go for a walk - I don't care if it's colder outside than my ex-girlfriend. I go out! 4. Talk to people - Socialize and talk to people. Do it without fear - I will anything to anyone in a light hearted and joyful way. 5. Affirmations - each day I tell myself about the good I've done in life and how things changed.

I can tell you for certainty that life was not kind to me, but I refuse to let life win. If you want someone to talk to, someone who has felt the way you have, who went from doing well to giving it all up, to regaining it, to feeling like giving up physically, etc.. let me know.

You have a moment in your life to turn this all around and show your family, friends, and yourself how you're a bad motherfucker you are. I love the struggle and I turned it into a game.

Honestly, seek professional help and if you like - we can talk. I'm very transparent about my life with everyone. P.S., Money doesn't change these feelings. I know that sounds like bullshit, but it's true from my experience.

Why leave now?

I find it ironic how polarizing and toxic Twitter has become, so I welcome an extreme change of ownership.

Granted Elon is intentionally trolling Twitter folks and after all the legal threats and comments made by staff, I don't blame him.

I say, let's see where it goes. I welcome the change and it seems like even Jack Dorsey does as well.

It's never too late to put yourself in debt.

Why not pour yourself into something you love professionally and take some risk. Eventually you may develop a mindset that you're too old to task risks in life.

Sorry, I'm not big on traditional education since it's just a business model that locks people into debt they can't escape.

Life is the best university there is out there. Its admission is just time and effort.

Note: I'm a high school drop out so don't pay me no mind :)

Hi, so I hope anything I say is useful to you and not just a bunch of random shit spewing from my keyboard.

I don't want to echo what others have already said, e.g, part of the process is luck, so I'll share my approach.

I'm a high school drop out, so I couldn't rely on my educational background. Instead, I just focus on attributes that are core to who I am.

1. Show your potential; early in your career, people hire for what potential you have. 2. Be calm, but show how hungry you are to learn and grow. Don't come off scattered brained or all over the fucking place. 3. Remember, most job qualifications tend to represent the perfect candidate, but that's rare so don't let it discourage you. Just don't be stupid and apply for roles that are clearly outside of your experience. e.g., must have 10 years of programming in Java. 4. When you get a job that's technical, make the leap. Commit to what you want and don't distract yourself out of fear. 5. Always be networking, but don't network in a way that makes you look desperate.

Lastly, enjoy this experience. It's on temporary and just because someone says no, it doesn't mean you're a piece of shit. Finding a job is like dating - just because someone says they like you, it doesn't mean you'll be happy and just because someone rejects you, it doesn't mean you won't find someone.

On that note, enjoy your weekend.

Bald person here.. I've been waiting for this question since I was 19; when I started to lose my hair.

When I was 14, my mom pulled back my hair line and asked my dysfunctional father if I was going bald. Talk about a "What the fuck are you doing" moment.

At 17, I was getting depressed about being bald. I would look in the mirror trying to see how much it changed. At 21, I said fuck it. I'm a sexy beast, see me shine!

I went through phases during my hair loss.

1. Keeping my hair wet to hide the fact it's thinning 2. Trimming it down, combing it forward and swirling the back so make it look "tight" 3. Trimming it very low and looking like a boss 4. Shaving it down to the skin and having people ask me why I don't grow my hair out

Here's how I coped with it. I was honest with myself.

Sure I would like to have hair, but I'm not Elon Musk. Did it impact my success with women? Yes, I think I get more women being bald. Why? I don't know honestly. Am I built like Jason Statham? More like a lean James Corden.

To make my situation, I'm a hairy man; pale (programmer) and I have a belly. I'm also seriously hairy... The only places I don't have hair is on my head, forehead, and palms; ironic right? Not on my palms? Wait until this shit turns gray... I'm going to look like a fucking Yeti.

Find your true source of confidence. It's not your hair, income, or job. It's the confidence you have in your ability to change.

I know you like having hair, but it's not what defines you. Plus, you're over 40 and thinning out. Congrats you lucky bastard :)

I hope you mentally get past your fears and concerns. Be honest with yourself buddy.

I have a lot to say, but I'll try to keep it brief.

1. Would this take away the illusion? I think it'll just inform people of what they already know; it's not 100% real. The indicator will only serve to reduce the anxiety and depression in some folks by reminding them that what you say isn't 100% real.

I don't think Instagram wasn't to be a service of unhappiness and illusion. That would destroy their brand and I honestly don't believe the people working at Meta have such ill intentions. I think they do take pride in having a large number of users and a large number of people who are generally speaking, happy to use the service, but don't fully realize how deeply it can impact impressionable folks.

All that being said, a lot of people are starting to have negative emotions about Meta and similar companies because of a) their success b) their social impact and c) along with both of these some pretty deep negative impacts that I believe Zuck and the many workers that never intended. Basically, it's a negative by product.

This is all an opinion and I could be full of shit.

So what you're saying is that your reply isn't a yes/no it's more in-depth?

I'm not seeking a yes/no answer. I'm seeking opinions of what people think not just about the idea, but the issue at hand with instagram without censorship or complex policies.

I kept a very small focus list of folks; technology only. Sadly, a lot of those folks would engage with others on political topics etc. and then my timeline would get flooded.
