Poor bash has had a bad week. I happened to spend some time last night playing with a bash script for controlling btsync running as as its own user. It was fun! See, bash isn't big and scary, its a cute little scripting language (lol).
I thought I'd share these instructions for setting up my script and btsync itself. If you're not familiar with BitTorrent Sync, its a decentralized file sharing network. So there's no costs, no limits, and no middle-man. I think its pretty cool and I'd love to see it catch on as an alternative to the "trust model" of storing your data on a company's servers.

Exactly. The default behavior is exactly as it should be-- scrub the VM itself but keep a snapshot for 48 hours in case it was deleted accidentally.
There is no security concern here but if some users are still upset with this default behavior then they should be manually scrubbing their sensitive data prior to deleting the droplet or, better yet, they should be using their own hardware.
Frankly, I'm shocked at a lot of the responses here. When I first came across this article it was immediately obvious to me that this was not an actual security concern but rather a mixture of misunderstanding and skepticism. So I came here to hackernews feeling entirely confident that this article would have been efficiently debunked and instead I find all manner of ill-informed arguments. The people that don't understand the original article, its fallacies, and the reality of how Digital Ocean is handling droplet destroys, should not be running servers IMO. This stuff should be obvious to you and furthermore, if your data is particularly sensitive, you should have already been under the assumption that the host could not be trusted and that data scrubbing must be done manually.
And in my experience you don't even get 100 Mbit. Comcast recently doubled my download speed to 60 Mbit and I quickly realized my WRT54G was only capable of downloading up to 30 Mbit. Typically I'd expect to see close to 10 MB/sec over 100Base-T but I was getting about 3.5 MB/sec max. It seemed to only be on the WAN port because I was able to stream stuff from my NAS at close to 10 MB/sec. It was disappointing so I upgraded to the WNR3500L which is working great. Both were running DD-WRT and worked well with it.
I've had success with the Netgear WNR3500L running DD-WRT. It doesn't have 5GHz but it does 2.4GHz great and on the cheap. The one I'm running now I bought refurbished for $35 and its rock solid stable and performs well.
Of course, its WiFi, so I'm already wishing I had AC so my portable devices were as fast as my wired desktop. But I don't think that will ever change. WiFi will probably never catch up to our ever increasing internet download speeds.
That was my comment and as soon as I posted it I realized my mistake of not mentioning that the military/industrial complex typically doesn't make money off of training teachers or the like. It is much more common and easier for them to build buildings and reap the financial rewards that way. In a perfect world; if our tax dollars are going toward rebuilding a country; they would be used for "services" like training teachers and other things that would truly benefit the area in the long run. Unfortunately the current system is setup for money laundering and profit so my hope is slim that real progress will be made in these areas.
