Im from the Tri-State so maybe I'm ignorant here, but do the public often have any say when any other industry starts to move into their town?

I guess I assume if they have the capital required, and a willing seller for land/development, the public's opinion doesn't really matter

As long as a single node in your chain is legit, you're fine, right?

>"if you want to send private messages then go make your own network"

Unironically, we should all move to using TOR.

Anyone setup a .onion mirror for HN yet? I'd assume usual HN-mirror-rules, no login or posting but free to view...

Fwiw, people mocked him long before this news broke. People aren't hating on him as a result of his diagnosis, just found a new (and admittedly ironic) point to pick at.

I agree with some points being made and disagree with others.

Professionals should be using the best tools they're comfortable using. If that means your therapist can ask better questions and make better use of their time because they have a STT model running, I think that's great, counter to the author. Importantly though, in therapy especially, your comfort matters more than time efficiency, and can understand asking for it to be disabled.

Catching up at a coffee shop does not need STT, I agree with OP...but are people really doing this? Sure, there's a few AI obsessed geeks doing it I'm sure, but is that really a main use-case of these devices?

I hope this isn't coming off as snarky or anything, I am honestly interested in the project...

So you're thinking something like Twitter(X)'s community notes, but instead of flagging misinformation, it will be used to 'community flag' an account as AI? Maybe it shadow bans, maybe it brings it to moderation queue, whatever...

I've seen a few of these 'NO LLM ALLOWED' sites pop up now, but any countermeasure to LLM use is easily subverted. I think the only real way to keep the LLMs out is, as you seem to agree, some sort of user-reported system (But that seems open to fraud....difficult problem to solve!)

Do you have some sort of detection for 'faceless accounts' ? Or are you moderating that by hand?

I like the idea, but how do you actually enforce the 'no bots' model?

I think, all pretty recently (atleast in the 'States), there's been much news and noise about the abuse and fraud of these systems designed to help the downtrodden.

Now whether that's all true, has always been true, is propaganda...whatever, but it's easy for me to understand why sentiment has been changing as the spotlight is focused more and more on the abuse of the systems as opposed to the benefits.

I also think there's some 'hierarchy of needs' going on here, where as the economy shifts and more and more Americans are struggling to afford housing, groceries, and other necessities, it's easy to feel like you should be putting yourself first over strangers. Combine that with the prior point, and you have a great recipe to build resentment. Selfish, maybe, but I can understand how you get there.

This is NOT to say 'There is no xenophobia' or anything...racism in general is alive and well in the USA... but I have pretty sound-minded people around me starting to echo this mindset, and this is my best understanding of what's been brewing.

I'm not familiar here, but if both the publishers and readers are unhappy, why do these services still exist? Is it the 'prestige' of being published with some of these guys? Or do you need to be published for xyz reasons?

Seems like, in 2026, we can have direct publishing without the need of these services? Is it the infra, like query tools and such, that prevent a migration away?

edit: I'm not going to reply to every comment, but thank you all, helps paint the picture a bit better for me!

The entire purpose of the assistant was to see how others would try to abuse it. How would you do that without having it discoverable online? Seems like that's kind of the whole point...

But that's the exact standard that was set by the LLM providers, right? My ChatGPT 3.5 sub became a 4o sub, which became a 5.1 sub and so on

Not championing it, but this is where something like OpenClaw comes into play, right? The harness around the model, the ability to call tools, etc.

Which is not illegal to do. It becomes illegal if you directly use or reference the material in your product. Consuming copyrighted material personally is fully legal, training a model on that same copy-righted material is illegal. Where is the contention?

Just throwing it out there, Im a Verizon customer in the Tri-State Area and I frequently lose service on the train or bus on my way to the city. It's more than just a 'rural issue'. I looked into getting a StarLink plan for my commute until I realized logistically, at best, I'm a freak sitting next to the window with a satellite dish on the train.
