Sounds possible. He can also find other ways to make money - bake other stuff overnight and sell it to other cafe's wholesale, etc etc. I've known people who've done exactly this kind of thing. It's doable.
I'm reading this from the bus as the sun sets on 280, looking over south San Francisco. You're so right. I just quit my job so I can make furniture full time. Got accepted to a really good, niche school in a beautiful coastal town in the middle of no where I'm moving with my partner. I'm not going to miss this scene at all.
You can recognize the cisterns because there are big (like 20 ft in diameter) brick circles inlaid into the street in SF to mark the cisterns. Neat once you know what to look for
But for someone who runs a business that relies on Instagram for marketing, and pays for advertising on that platform, it's a bit scary when the whole thing is down. Obviously this was only temporary this morning, and sure, no charges while down, but doesn't do me much good...
The chairman is typically elected by the board, but there's a lot of variety. Some smaller ones just make a schedule early to basically rotate through members for two years periods. I think there's a lot of variety in this part depending on the company, board, shareholders, etc.
I've done the same for a couple years now but it means I don't get those instant notifications, I'm not responding to anything right away. Maybe every day or two I check it for five minutes. That's not leaving the app but it's definitely not the kind of user they're looking for
It still throws me, and I live and work out here. I see buses with this marked on them, I always think they're buses the to TV network, then I go 'Duh'
Jennie Alexander, an amazing woodworker who just passed away last week, wrote on this topic extensively. Check out her books 'Make a Chair from a Tree'
Carbon Dating is typically for things at least 500 years old. While that might be useful for furniture, it wouldn't apply here.
Glue is useful - an older chair would have used hide glue, made from real animals. If a modern, non-hide glue was used that's an immediate giveaway. However, modern furniture builders still use it quite a lot in high end work today
Yep - I have a friend who takes pictures of (very expensive, high profile) weddings all around the world with a MF film Hasselblad. They still can't be beat
It was a really great read. My dad was a solid state electrical engineer working on silicon, and went to Grinnell as well for his undergrad. We are from just south of there. Nice to hear about the place
"hobo is an itinerant worker, a career which sprang up during the depression. A hobo, unlike a bum or a tramp, is more than willing to work, but mostly for a short duration, as their main impetus is travel, the love of the journey above the actual destination. A bum is stationary, feeding off of those unfortunate enough to cross his path; a hobo merely travels from town to town, finding work when he can, but only for the sake of financing his next adventure. NEVER call a hobo a bum...they'll kick your sorry no-bo ass!"
