I don't think it would. I messed with this scammer for a good while and I found that they either use Google Voice or apps like Burner to get new, virtual cell phone numbers easily.

Congrats. I used to be a big fan of Padmapper until recently and kept recommending it to my friends and family, but I've noticed that it has become a cess pool of scammers. When I encountered one of these scammers and reported them to Padmapper support, I was assured it would be dealt with. This was a month ago and the scammer's profiles are still active on the site (his newer profile still has listings: http://www.padlister.com/profile/show/469392). I emailed Eric directly about it too, but received no further response. I was pretty disappointed by the lack of action on their part and I ended up switching back to Craigslist for my latest apartment search.
Here's a tip: bookmark https://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr and you will always see the most recent feed. I've been using this for months now and it hasn't unset the most recent setting yet.

Considering the potential client has also asked for some other contract changes that would increase my liability to them, I've decided to stand firm and not give in to any of their contract change requests. We've been working on getting a deal together for 6 weeks now and I've found them quite inexperienced with technical matters so far. I think this translates into a lack of trust towards me, though I don't get the feeling there's any malice or ill-will behind it. So if they insist on their proposed changes to the contract, I will happily walk away. Thanks again for your thoughts!
I focus on job posts by people in the US and emphasize my almost 2 decade experience in web development, my location (California), and my reliability. Clients in the US often prefer freelancers in the US because they've been burned by overseas devs before. I also mostly apply to jobs that aren't that easy to people with less experience (so I avoid any Wordpress/Joomla/Magento jobs, or any of the "convert PSD to HTML" jobs). It always helps to read the job posting entirely and ask clarifying questions in the proposal (shows that you've read it). Also, try to customize your proposal to each client as much as possible.
