Cool, and something I’ve been curious about (the civil engineering and math involved from earlier representations). I want the logic behind the notation, though. I assume there’s a background system of folding a rope into equilateral pieces that led to this system of fractional math that I would love any YouTube or other recommendations on

I've recovered some systems I b0rked by dding from a healthy system or a livedisk to a machine I updated incorrectly, I could have tried just copying from the disk fine and figured it out I'm sure, but I didn't want to open another rabbit hole with the SteamOS update and config. SteamOS has duplicate /, /var, and /boot partitions, and I assume there's some part of the install configuration that sets the active and inactive sets.

Really I was just after testing/listing included bt drivers on some specific hardware for some wonky controllers I have, installation was a secondary thought.

I tried installing SteamOS on a couple machines last week. One pain point is that their install scripts are just that - non interactive scripts that are designed for gaming handhelds such as the steam deck. The main issue being it expects to be the only OS installed, it will clobber your entire physical volume with its new partition layout and file systems. Not a big deal for a dedicated gaming machine but not what I want for my laptop.

Sadly, the main gaming specific competitor distro- bazzite, has a similar issue. You can install it to a partition (with limited options) but it has some compatibility issue with other EFI bootloaders, the quick fix for me was to install refit and use that to boot while I tested it

Manually installing steamos is on my might todo list, but I feel like someone, maybe Valve, will release an interactive installer soon as the momentum grows. I understand the reasoning, most gamers are not Linux power users, most of these desktop installs are probably gamers recycling old PCs not compatible with Windows’s latest requirements. Still, it would be nice to have some properly labeled footguns on the install media for those of us that want to participate in the testing and now rapidly growing community.

Steam, the app, its protondb/wine compatibility tools, etc all still work fine on my Mint setup, so there’s not much need for me to pursue this but I am curious about how their distro feels, and how well it would work as even a daily driver distro

I drink 3 moka pots each morning and usually one in the afternoon. I don’t have Parkinson’s right now, but for all I know I am pre diagnosis…. I have been getting tingling feelings in my fingers lately

Wow I have been mixing 5g of creatine in my morning for the past several months, this is terrifying.

If you use a trailing slash on the source it copies from the directory, if you omit the trailing slash it copies the directory itself. AFAIK this is pretty standard across POSIX tools

I am only amateur level with scheme but these are common to other scheme implementations. SRFIs are semi-standardized core libraries that work mostly the same in all implementations. I believe the record-type and records generally are one of these SRFIs, and it’s based on a chapter in SICP (several show up as sections of the book where students implement things that would be language feature in a larger env)

All the Lisp implementations seem to have pretty cryptic seeming errors, but it also seems to be very informative to those who know how to parse the call stack and how to expand/dig down in the built in debuggers. This is likely because of the same idea as those record-types, much of the language is built in the same lisp you’re running - so the error messages go a few levels lower level than you would expect. It’s not just a C syntax error type explanation, but rather you get some error about a bad call to a function you’ve never heard of running below that feature we normally associate with being a core function

There’s no in and out privileges to get ice elsewhere, so the organization coordinates huge ice shipments into the event. All the proceeds from the ice and coffee sales benefit the local schools and students, which is great because that area is doing pretty rough economically

I’ve been wanting to build one of these for awhile. Did you follow a plan/blog or design your own? I already have donor instax and Polaroid bodies not sure what to put it as a back on

Pinhole cameras can be nothing but a soda can and a hole in it. Large format and some medium format folding camera shutter lens units just need a round hole to slip into and all the controls are external and built in

I wouldn’t say it is obvious. Apple does not have the monopoly of ARM based PCs. Labeling it as a monopoly of M chips is not fair or accurate when comparing to MS on Intel. It’s also probably relevant that MS was not selling PCs or their own hardware. They had a monopoly on a market where you effectively had to use their software to use the hardware you bought from a different company. Because Apple is selling their own hardware and software as a single product, the consumer is not forced into restricting the hardware they bought by a second company’s policies.

This style/format is really easy to follow along with, great blog writing. Separately I’ve been messing with some filesystem stuff so it’s interesting to me.

Often but not always. Sometimes you’re just working with proxies directly, audio mixing and the like. VFX workflows, finishing will be online full res often.

But even so everybody is often making their own proxies all the time. There’s a lot of passing around of ProRes Proxy or another intermediate quality format and you still make even lighter proxies locally so NLEs and workstation apps will still benefit from this

Forced to take on the extra revenue? There’s been political attacks on USPS but don’t blame junk mail on that. I don’t think USPS even has a choice on the junk mail, as long as it’s legal I don’t think they can refuse the service
