Sure, whatever, but I do note that it generated substantive commentary for a post that generated little of substance itself.
Ah, fuck it. Your moderation is inconsistent. Lots of frivolous and low quality comments sail right on by you, shitting up threads all over the site, but here you go picking on, yes, an admittedly low-quality yet heart-felt sub-thread starter that resulted in quality commentary that is now hidden from sight. What a stupid decision, axing good discussion because it started off poorly.
Ima fuck on off, no need to put up with your shit. Screw your head on right, guy.
It occurs to me that instead of blaming government, it’s really the non-voters who have created this absurd mess. If they voted, I believe that most of them would vote for the better candidates. But because they don’t vote, the highly incentivized voters—which is to say the single-issue crazies—get the win. Next thing you know, your libraries are closed, your teachers are quitting, your infrastructure fails, and your country starts looking like a third world nation with plummeting lifespans, millions of homeless, devastated economies, and more corruption than you can shake a stick at.
Please, encourage your friends and coworkers to vote. Not to tell them who to vote for but just to vote. It really does matter!
Why TF would you even care? No one’s going to make you eat a poor simulacrum of pork, and of someone else is willing to eat it, it frees up more real meat for you. You are not being harmed by other people’s food choices.
Instead of trialing a vaccine that uses technologies that have been in development for a decade, you decided to trial a virus that no human body has ever had to deal with. Boy, does that makes sense! Godspeed and good luck continuing to roll the die.
Alas, they will always get rewarded for the attention-seeking behaviour. Always. Because it’s a sad fact that there are always people who are attracted to destructive attention-seekers, just as there are people attracted to mass murderers, satanic telepreachers, and promoters of poisonous ideologies. They simply don’t see these characters like you and I do. There’s money to be made by connecting these populations, from pamphlets and Speakers Corner to websites and Social Media. It’s always been a problem. But now, with a global population of billions, these trollish people are basically guaranteed to draw enough attention to have dangerous influence.
> News Ltd bought up regional (small country town) newspapers extensively, to the point that the ACCC got concerned. They then proceeded (if I recall this correctly) to shut them down, and centralise news production with a small amount of local news injection.
Same thing happened in Canada with Post Media. Slaughtered local reporting. Endless go-arounds with the Competition Bureau. Now two-thirds owned by the right-wing hedge fund Chatham Asset Management. Same guys who owned the National Enquirer, famous for Batboy and hush-money suppression of scandalous Trump stories.
“Do deliberate”, I think. Like the mafia setting up a hazardous waste disposal company, and then simply dumping the waste into a ditch. Makes them a lot more money.
> what should pollution be measured as a function of?
Consumption? China is a huge emitter, but a large percentage of that comes from making products destined for America and Europe. IMO the emissions for those products should be assigned to the country that is purchasing them.
I think duties are meant to help US manufacturing compete with foreign (read: third world) factories, where pay, safety, and environmental standards are much, much lower.
But maybe I’m wrong; duties often seem arbitrary and unhelpful, less a tool for helping citizens and more to hurt recalcitrant nations.
It is, but as we have witnessed for decades, and intensely more so in recent years, the application of the law is inversely proportional to the wealth of the defendant.
