Perhaps not everyone feels this way, but I think that there are a large amount of employees that feel like they've failed by not being completely self-sufficient(i.e. contract or own their own business). They can still be easy to work with, productive, etc., but they may view their job trying to feed them and do their laundry as an encroachment on their personal life and perhaps even a vie for more of their time by 'no longer having an excuse'. Of course, this goes unsaid because 'they're just providing services you're too good to do yourself.'
In addition, expecting someone with administrative aspirations to play in a ball pit could be considered downright offensive, thanks to its perceived condescension and lack of any real interest.
I'm alienated from coffee shops because of laptop users. I'm around electronics all day. When I go to the cafe, I want a break with a cup of coffee with a friend.
I don't want to see one person hogging a table for four, or overhear business phone calls and headphones.
I'm not saying that I'm important either, but these are the reasons why I will choose one cafe over another.
Does instant messaging and email in and of themselves count as interruptions?
If I'm asked to be pulled off a task, then it is a problem. However, if it is a short question, no memory is paged out and it is insignificant.
I ask this because some developers do not want to be available on IM because they feel it is distracting. However, I feel like it causes more interruptions and difficulty in communication because every little thing needs to be voiced and requires full attention at the exact time the question is asked.

I'm curious why no mention of tmux?
Personally, I've found a pretty satisfactory workspace method with:
Full screen terminal, always running tmux. This gives me tiling inside of the terminal.
Other than that, I use mainly a web browser. You can install a vim keybinding plugin for Chrome or Firefox. I generally keep that in fullscreen mode, and those are my two main windows.
It's not xmonad, but if you use mainly cli tools, there's not much difference.
