I have no concern for young generations wanting to blame our age group. The day will come soon that their generation is pointed at for not solving the complex problems of their day. Now if they will show me the same grace when I start a story with "back in my day" we will all get along.

I live in rural Maine so it may not be the same everywhere but a few months ago I was just enjoying the outdoors and noticed all these fast moving objects. Turns out they were satellites. You could see one or two fly over every couple of minutes.

Christmas dinner for my immediate family almost $500. That was pretty much dinner and our favorite appetizers but does not count the liquor and wine. This was just me, my ex, five kids, a daughter in law and grandchild. I can see getting to 3k pretty fast.

I bet you are the life of the party. Seriously though, what makes you write that so matter of factly?

I just wish someone would make a first person version of AMFV. It would need to be a really different game to stay true to AMFV but I think it could revolve around not getting shut down by the bureaucrats.

I like that it is a well maintained unix like environment with full on vendor support. Since the pi 5 performance has been good enough for everything I do and the 400 is still my go-to when I need an extra machine for something. Given that, there is almost no way I will buy one but if I didn't already have a pi 5 workstation I probably would.

You may be right. I am on the Roku accessories page and it doesn't look like my remote is even sold any more. Mine is the voice remote with headphones but it does not have the two shortcut buttons.

My TV is a 43" HP Monitor. Some things just don't work right. The Roku cannot turn off the display like it could my old television. Since the monitor has no speakers, I have to use a soundbar but the Roku remote cannot adjust the volume so I have to use two remotes. None of this is a big deal to me but it is not seamless.

Are you suggesting that people should ignore their personal experiences if they do not align with what the science tells them? Why would you declare that anyone is in denial about their own reality?

My father's Seiko from the late 70s still keeps time at around 30 seconds per day. It has never been serviced so I am sure it is bone dry and really should not be run. I regularly wear a 2015 Seiko that used to be 8 seconds per day fast but has fallen to 5 seconds per day slow so it is probably time to service it. My two newest watches are from 2017 and 2021 and they are consistent since break in. So given my limited number of data points, I would say 5-7 years between service but if you just want to wear it until it dies, 10+ years is probably reasonable.

On a side note, I have read about 40 year old Seikos being worn daily without service but that sure feels outside of the norm.

And yet we vote them back into office. What is the solution to this problem?

In the mid 90s the only reason that I wanted internet access was for usenet. The web felt insignificant compared to the information available on usenet. It did not matter the topic, there was a discussion group for it. Web sites and services slowly started to move me away from reading Usenet to the point today where I check posts maybe three times per year.

For the heck of it, I just fired up tin to see how many posts since I read last:

1 3866 alt.folklore.computers Stories & anecdotes about computers (some true!). 2 151 alt.hacker No description. 3 1951 alt.obituaries Notices of dead folks. 4 13 comp.graphics.algorithms Algorithms used in producing computer graphics. 5 5021 comp.lang.c Discussion about C. 6 17 comp.os.linux.hardware Hardware compatibility with the Linux operating system. 7 1 comp.os.linux.setup Linux installation and system administration. 8 30 comp.sys.hp48 Hewlett-Packard's HP48 and HP28 calculators. 9 comp.unix.misc Various topics that don't fit other groups. 10 501 comp.unix.programmer Q&A for people programming under Unix. 11 1 comp.unix.questions UNIX neophytes group. 12 1190 comp.unix.shell Using and programming the Unix shell. 13 comp.unix.admin Administering a Unix-based system. 14 465 comp.misc General topics about computers not covered elsewhere. 15 138 rec.games.roguelike.nethack The computer game Nethack. 16 4001 comp.lang.python The Python computer language. 17 2119 comp.sys.raspberry-pi Raspberry Pi computers & related hardware and software. 18 8 alt.sources Alternative source code, unmoderated. Caveat Emptor.

Not completely dead yet.

I get that a list of tables and fields is not great documentation by itself, but QAD also provides ERD diagrams, implementation guides, user guides, administrative guides, and other documents. The overall quality of their documentation is outstanding. I worked in a QAD shop for over ten years, and their documentation is complete, accurate, well organized, and easy to understand.

To give you an idea about the real scope of what is behind an ERP system, here is a link to the database definitions behind QAD's MFG/Pro:

https://documentlibrary.qad.com/documents/2370665/2368142/Da...

This is a product designed for small to medium sized businesses so it is not as comprehensive as a SAP. Take a serious look at the schema and imagine if you just had to write CRUD, it would take hundreds of man years. But it is not a CRUD app because there is business logic behind ever module.

Now imagine that there is also a whole ecosystem of vendors that sit under the QAD tree to provide niche solutions for the various use cases not covered by QAD. So not only do you have to write the ERP, but you have to write the pieces picked up by the other vendors in this ecosystem.
