My friend who was goint to quit the warehouse job and become AI researcher is now not going to quit because the wage increased.
So what's the net effect? A low income trap.
If these people would be layed off instead and goveement offers a minimum wage + housing. They could as well be acquiring skills like programming, AI etc... And making millions.
But Bezos will not let them be millionaires or billionaires.
Can you explain how? The money whuch they take either becomes a) investement b) expense or c) stashed somewhere ( which doesn't chase goods or services so doesn't increase inflation which can be counter through inflation chasing money supply.
People can only acquire skills if they've time and ability for it, which implies they come from priviledged background.
So government can surely implement some policy to tax these privileged class 80% and use that money for welfare of warehouse workers, and make it equality of outcomes.
I come from Poland where girls either choose a) medicine b) pyscology c) fashion related gig like hair dressers, tailor d) modeling (often most pretty girls choose this)
Here in Poland, entry level gigs in technology companies pay way less than modeling gigs these days.
I asked many of those girls who went into modeling and fashion related jobs, they always said, they found it easier and more rewarding than jobs where someome else might steal their credit.
> Maybe because Instagram millionaires are about as common as sports millionaires?
If you enjoy it, that's good. But not everyone enjoys it and that's why STEM has lower praticipation from females and that's what we are discussing here.
I didn't say millionaire anywhere. Many modeling gigs pay more than entry level median salaries in STEM.
It's about efforts vs reward.
People in STEM require years of education compared to posting a product review on Instgram which doesn't even require a high school certificate.
Don't compare it to Pro football players either which is very risky and requires years of training and money.
There are female influencer making lot of money on Instagram by posting photos of their bodies, makeup kits, outfits etc.... who are making way more than median pay in STEM career.
I don't understand why would any woman choose STEM when batter paying gigs are available to them.
I am a masocist, i wouldn't be in development getting insulted by a lifeless computer everyday if i was normal.
Anyone who insults me and motivates to offer my best, gets my respect and best work. Heck, i would work for more hours if you can offer me such cortisol+dopamine effect which comes from such treatment.
Think about this. Who struggles with a lifeless computer when they only get the sufferings and frustration which comes with it?
Swearing at me is the least you could do to provoke any response.
I like Steve Jobs and I've yet to find the CEOs who are like him. This is probably why there is no other apple.
Most likely what will happen is not what you think.
They'll do nothing and successice complaints will remove you from a role which requires you interfacing with the CEO and then someone else who is capable of taking these blows will get the compesation and influence you had when you were in that role.
It's a balancing act, you can't have everything your way.
What I've seen is that people who take it up with HR get blacklisted after multiple complaints and will not find much success. You need perseverance to take every blow and still stand on your feet.
When i first worked in Finland for a very successful mobile game development company, the project manager told me, whatever you are working on is complete shit, we can't afford you to be wasting our money on this. Every single minute you spend in arguing for your idea is paid by us which is true.
After that i got a blow to my ego and started doing what manager told me to. Looking back, i was really wasting their money and once i got blow to my ego, my productivity drastically increased.
I used to be fast learning workholic and yes, i need constant blows to my ego to prevent me from derailing myself into oblivion. So, i would have respect Steve jobs, if he would have been asshole to me.
Edit: I simply detailed my personal experience, so I don't understand your downvotes.
For me programming is run or die.
Just automate your colleagues job, then show your boss how you managed to reduce the employee cost and you'll soon be making way more money
Boss loves automation because humans are less reliable than algorithms and replica sets :)
