Would you think there is still a chance for iPad games that are well-made and well-advertised on the internet, that cost perhaps over $10, maybe even $20, to do well?

I see this as, first you have the stuff that's top ranking on the app store which is mostly f2p optimization problems. But hardcore gamers should be able to spread the word about an actual good ipad game, right? Or is the notion of an ipad game itself not hardcore enougH?

I really like this categorization of political conflict into levels. It sums up a lot of my experience.

It's very helpful because putting it into objective terms like this makes the actual experience seem less intense and lets me be less emotionally disturbed over it.

Sure, just like food is a kind of obesity of the body! Aren't there good things about reading information you want to read on the internet? With food it's quite obvious: you don't eat, you die!

It's been my experience that distractibility and overeating, especially when feeling bad about it afterwards, is a sign you need to make a change and something is very wrong with how you are living at a level deeper than what internet websites you read or food you eat.

Sometimes all I do pretty much all day is internet browsing and I can't even summon the focus to play a video game or watch a movie (two activities demanding much more focus than internet browsing).

Other times I'm super immersed in a project I'm doing and can't stop thinking about how cool it would be to, say, compile <Foo> to run on the GPU and won't stop till it's done.

The difference between me and the people who accept the unstated biases and values of the article is that I trust and believe in myself enough to give myself a mental gold star for BOTH activities. Thus enhancing whatever value I get out of them.

The thing I keep in mind is that: sometimes aimless internet browsing, like eating, is just that: enjoyable river of information and enjoyable food. Not very hard to understand. However, sometimes it's a cover up for deeper problems in my life at large. But what is guaranteed to fuck it all up and make it worse is if I suddenly frame the issue as fixing distraction or overeating and not the underlying problems.

This is really a psychological issue at heart, relating to self-concept and implicit negative self-biases and those kinds of attention and eating issues are a great example of how your mental health is a domain where where correcting symptoms only is nearly always vastly worse than attempting to correct the real problem.

Of course, none of this nuance is appreciated by The Guardian or anyone who writes for it, because they have a vested interest in putting out articles that keep people stressed out and resentful so they can slave away in conflict against each other to keep a few rich :)

I just think it's a tragedy that the prof only goes this far.

The observation in the article you paraphrased is more the realization of a student or bright child, not a fucking professor. It's sad that we let things degenerate this far in regard to CS education. Only in CS is this "let the rest fail" the conventional wisdom (conventional idiocy that is).

And yes, racial segregation of classes is something that enriches the upper class in general, and the prof is advocating this and that alone makes me hold her in contempt.

If by "post" you are referring to the pile of shit that is linked, then yes. My negativity here is NOTHING compared to the negativity and resentment by the professor in the article, who cloaks it in positive language.

I'm only saying that people should be more aware of what drives others, and look past the surface.

On the other hand, he is advocating for a Cult of Computer Science with specially designed courses for different races of people. Whites get one sort of programming class, women another, blacks yet another, asians yet another, etc.

He's also completely submitted and subjugated himself to the concept of education as preparation for being a laborer drone to make the few richer, rather than education as a way to educate the student. You can tell by his blind devotion to Paul Graham and business students (only business students are as self driven as CS people, obvioulsy they must be because everyone's in it for the money and BIM students are closer to the source)

And as a professor, one can do a lot more damage to society being like this than in other positions. So either this whole article is gratuitous negativity, or it's not and what I'm saying is actually gratuitious positivity; the world is going to be so much better once people like him aren't around!

That's right on with "too shy".

The issues of pedagogy whether it is music or programming are largely sociological.

So why not make being a manic musician attractive and marketable like they do in movies about music?

I guarantee you that the core inspiration that starts (and to a large extent sustains) any involvement in any activity is aesthetic. This makes aesthetics the beginning and end of activities.

But in programming, we just use the manic people as Golden Children to somehow whip the other students into shape. This utterly fails of course, aesthetically and practically and in every other way imaginable. It's an ugly way of doing things and it doesn't actually produce good programmers.

Rubbish article by a professor who somehow can't think straight.

Newsflash: Everyone is as "self-driven" as your typical Golden CS Boy who is going to be next #1 at sucking up to VC's.

And I'll tell you what drives most of those types of people: feelings of inadequacy and insecurity and needing someone to compare against to feel better about himself (i.e., subhuman).

Anyways, going back to the main point, people are very obviously and palpably "self-driven." Otherwise they would just sit there like a robot, and you'd have to give them commands in some kind of neuro assembly language lol.

They are just driven in different directions than you prefer, and it's your job as a fucking teacher to find what these directions are and SHOW them gaps in their thinking and how they can get better.

Of course, you aren't actually interested in this; you just want a choir of more wretched subhumans to preach to.

Broadly speaking, it's sad and funny that nearly 80% of professors I've seen don't do it because they like the subject, it's more because they like the status and want to look down on more people.

In fact, it's only like 20% of professors I've encountered who continually renew my faith and sense of curiosity in the subject, and always introduce me to new realms of the field where I can improve my understanding.

One day people will find out they don't have to pay tuition to be belittled by subhuman idiots presiding in what is in most cases, in the final analysis, make-work positions, and just read HN or proggit for however much internet access costs :)

Ok, instead of reading a Wikipedia page or two, or the most elementary chapter in a probability/statistics textbook and gaining a bunch more skills (among them the tools needed to reason about whether your MCMC is doing anything close to reproducing the original distribution), I can peruse a huge blog post filled with patronizing language and it doesn't even have the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm listed out even in pseudocode. Got it, this is what progress looks like.

Wow, this was a big wake-up call. It's ironic because I am in research and I always did a lot of theory and problem definition up front for whatever I did, but I am now in this "reckless rapid prototyping" phase where if I get some idea I have to try it out RIGHT NOW, stepping back be damned. Ironically it results in getting stuck more than I would have wanted!

I guess this is the fourth tip?

What was interesting is that the higher-performing group (Alpha) was stuck less often that the lower-performing group (Gamma). Is this the next programming motto after "Don't Repeat Yourself"?

Now how does one avoid getting stuck while programming? I still get stuck a lot, but these really helped:

- Test what you write as quickly as you can.

- Hold it in your head! Or you won't have a clue what all your code, together, is doing.

- To get started, ask yourself, what is the simplest thing that could possibly work?
