I am in a similar situation before (Being employee #1) and the way I'm thrown out is just by a simple SMS telling me that I'm not needed anymore, taunting me and locking me out of everything. I got so mad that I don't even want to accept their money as I agreed to help them (used to be friends) for free back then till they are profitable.
Having said that, looking back at it now, it is perhaps a good thing. I went on to have much better success elsewhere, while they had success in their business as well. Do I feel bitter? maybe in the past, but now I can't be brothered. He still send emails 2-3 times a year taunting me about his success with different email addresses which I simply send it to my spam folder.
Most importantly, what I learn is that, sometimes things just don't work out. The reasons for falling out could be many and weird. For my case, my 2 other founder friends are people who prefer 'Yes' men who agree with their groupthink all the time. I'm not one of them and hence it is not surprising we have to part (Although it turn out for the case which I'm arguing against and got them angry, I turned out to be correct as time passed)

What if he live in a country where hacker news is hardly known and the society values a degree very highly and no matter how well you perform and that there is always a glass ceiling to block non degree holders from rising up.
Hmmm. I commented on this in the other hacker news entry (for his talk) and got a -1 for it. I guess this is just a habit formed after many years. The quality of the talk is still great and that what's most important.
Actually it sounds more to me that he should be the one resigning instead of firing "Tom". But well perhaps as the owner of a company he can't really fire himself, so someone have to be the scrape goat which is Tom.
However, it is good that he understand that he is partly to blame too, as some startup founders I seen rather shift all the blame to someone and fire him and think of many reasons why it's not their fault at all.

What if by some stroke of luck, Challenger was extremely lucky enough to not explode on that 1st launch...What would happen to these righteous people such as Roger? Condemned by the people around them as some over worrying, insane self righteous people who thought they know everything. If you get what I mean...
It's sad that the challenger explosion happened, but at the same time it helps to highlight an important issue which may otherwise remain buried.
In software/web development context, it's of course harder to say this thing is going to blow up because a serious technical debt usually only climbs in after a much longer time for which by then, the people responsible may have left . Leaving the next victim to clean it up. This also is a sad state when it comes to final year projects, where students try to do everything that could impress to the graders on the outside to get the top grade. While students who make the extra effort for a clean and maintainble backend did not get the top grades because the lecturer only looks at the outside during presentation.
For me, traditional maths education in my country fails me (although my country is ranked very highly in maths and the implications of failing maths is huge as schools reject you)
I would say, what don't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for others. Khan Academy, at the very least gave me hope that I can actually do some maths, which is more important than giving up on maths totally.
Well, I don't know why, but I just hate it when Humble Bundle puts in a game I already purchased in previous humble bundles and all games being in the same steam key as well. However, having an android app this time lessen the pain by a little though. Although I not owning an android currently.
