Oh gosh. Is that really what DOS games used to sound like? I had an Amiga until the late nineties so missed out on that... static!? (wasn't sure if my speakers were playing up when it first started)
How did the Amiga sound so much better at the time. Think I need to go digging and watch some YouTube videos about it.

PC's didn't have any dedicated sound hardware (unless you had a sound card), so any kind of sound/music playback would have to be done in real-time on the CPU, which didn't leave much for the rest of your game. C64, Amiga, etc. all had dedicated sound chips which could do a lot of the synthesis and mixing without burdening the CPU. (This is the same reason why PCs didn't get side-scrolling games until much later than consoles: consoles had dedicated hardware for scrolling tilemaps and displaying sprites, while PCs just had a memory-mapped framebuffer of pixels.)

If you only had a PC speaker, yes, although some games sounded better. At some point in the 90s, Sound Blaster cards started getting popular and those sounded way better than this example.

No. Stop using Medium, please.

What do Medium users (i.e. authors) get in exchange for having this annoyance put in front of their readers?
I'm still trying to work this out as well. Why does Medium even register on Google search results? I thought showing one thing to the crawler and another to the user got you demoted.
Medium just sort of became the go-to for vaguely technical blogs. I'm sure there's much better platforms out there
Gah, a shame EA are getting it via CodeMasters.
A shame someone at CodeMasters couldn't sign off them getting it before this happens.
