I mean it's not like Ukraine is serious about negotiations themselves (and why should they be), and neither is Russia. Serious negotiations imply that there is even a remote possibility of the sides working out the deal. One look at the starting positions of what Ukraine would want to settle and what Russia would want to settle tells you all you need to know.
Asking Zelensky to negotiate for Ukrainian statehood is more ridiculous than asking Putin to negotiate the existence of the current Russian state as it is, but both propositions in themselves are completely disconnected from reality.

Disagree. They already had an acceptable deal to both parties on the table in April and the US torpedoed it. They sent Boris to make sure the message was completely understood. Ukrainian press even reported that.

Get a clue— Russia has been willing to negotiate in good faith all along. It’s the US that has blocked those negotiations from succeeding, along with right sector Nazis within the Ukrainian government (who assassinated one of their own negotiators, btw). This article indicates that the US may be finally ready to allow the major hostilities to end and won’t try to weaken Russia further by “fighting to the last Ukrainian” as Lindsey Graham so eloquently put it.
As winter, Russian reinforcements, and the midterms approach, Blinken and Sullivan face reality. After all, the primary objective, selling more US LNG to Europe, has been achieved. Hopefully they won’t just send another lapdog British PM to kill the deal like they did in April.

Quite cynical proposal, the differences between the stubborn Putin and adrenaline filled Zelensky are not Americas fault.
I’m sure US has better things to initiate than sell oil.
Winter cuts both ways, we are already seeing Russian recruits and officers voice their opinion against being sent to the meat grinder.
In fact there is still no justification for the attack on civilians which seems to have motivated Ukrainians further.

The attacks on civilian infrastructure were a direct result of the escalation on the part of the West and the Azov-controlled Ukrainian military— bombing the bridge to Crimea and the Nordstream pipelines, etc.

Biden imperiled Democratic chances in the midterms due to accelerating inflation in exchange for helping an industry that hates him and is populated with people who hate him boost sales?
That’s the most impressive part of all— the neocons got the Dems to (enthusiastically) carry out their insane foreign policy predicated on desperately maintaining US hegemony AND making the Dems pay the price for it at the polls.
>The encouragement is aimed not at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, but ensuring it maintains a moral high ground in the eyes of its international backers
...
> While U.S. officials share their Ukrainian counterparts’ assessment that Putin, for now, isn’t serious about negotiations, they acknowledge that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s ban on talks with him has generated concern in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America, where the war’s disruptive effects on the availability and cost of food and fuel are felt most sharply.
Biden simply wants to bring attention that Ukraine has been willing to negotiate in good faith effort to get Russia to get out ASAP while Russia has been unwilling to admit its losing the war and has seemed to stick to it's initial goals of conquering Ukraine even as the goal gets more and more ridiculous.
If Russia wants any scraps of face-saving gestures or to get its foreign reserves back it had better start negotiating soon.
