He probably wouldn’t read most of the mails. I’d just do what I do for my current employer: just send a list of commits of the last week, occasionally adding succinct meeting details.
Shouldn’t take a lot of time really, can script getting a list of commits of last week. Shouldn’t be a big deal for most devs I think, might be more annoying for other jobs.

On one hand, sending weekly status updates is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask for. Personally, I would prefer an email update to a meeting. On the other hand, asking 2000+ employees to send a weekly update to one person and not having them see it as pointless busywork, doesn’t seem reasonable.

Elon Musk does not scale. This isn't practical.
This feels like management by random walk.

Elon Musk does not appear smart enough to implement the most basic project management software like GitLab projects and file sharing solutions to track users work.
Any high performer who could resist the temptation to send a detailed narrative of their latest significant poop, with photos, along with a curt resignation, is a stronger person than me. It really seems like he's asking for it.
Yeah, Mars will have to wait.
