I think it sadly did. :(

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. - Maya Angelou
Who is "they" and what aren't we "believing" about "them"?
It’s not xenophobic to question the motives of your greatest geopolitical adversary.
We should be questioning the motives behind any company directly affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army.

The article lays out exactly what the problem is with viewing similar things as the same.
The rules they are operating under are not the same.

Only in your mind. It would be like saying Meta == America, and are out to convert Chinese teenagers into becoming narcissistic hipsters who dislike harmony through Instagram.
It makes the suggester look like a racist conspiracy wingnut because there is a no evidence to suggest there is anything more than a routine investment.
Even if ByteDance sold all equity to US owners, moved all servers to the US, and changed teams to only US and European workers, some people will still hold onto sour grapes because someone else is successful. That's the ideology of someone who gave up on competition and is resigned to criticism from the sidelines.

How is anything I said racist? I explicitly called out the Chinese Communist Party and its military arm the People's Liberation Army. This has nothing to do with race, just geopolitics. I have nothing against the people of China themselves, just their government.
Feel free to engage in whataboutism with Meta and the US government, it doesn't take anything away from what I or the article we're commenting on have said.

Redbaiting sinophobia dogwhistle.
I don't follow why it's not a good idea for every organization to ban CandyCrush, Grindr, SpyOnYourEx, CheatOnYourSpouse, RandomAppFromWherever from work devices. BYOD is also a terrible idea, and then leap to the conclusion little red agents are converting your children to Marxist totalitarianism. The two ideas are completely different.

"The difference is the extensive legal framework protecting Western citizens and companies from state security overreach."
Unfortunately, China is winning in the rest of the world for the same reason. While western citizens and companies are well protected, the West has intentionally kept the rest of the world vulnerable for self dirty interest. We have seen the Western hypocrisy in policies and moral codes destroying societies for decades all over the world. If the Western code of conducts for the rest of the world were hypocrisy free, Chinese slithering would have been impossible, and the world would be a lot better than it is now.

Let's not compared China to reptiles. That's a terrible thing to say.
> If you want a taste of what they’re up against, if you own a Chinese-brand smartphone and you’re Linux-savvy, go and look at what’s in the firmware and process list. You will be entertained.
Being Linux savvy doesn't apply to Android. I checked my new stock Xiaomi and it has no keyloggers, whereas the last time I got a Samsung device it was logging key taps, sms contents and calls.
Either that or the reg has really gone down hill...
