Bill Ackman's lawyer called and said..."The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function." :-))
What would even prompt Business Insider to launch an investigation like this?
The whole thing is ridiculous.
The primary ridiculous fact that it's OK to say genocide against Jews is OK depending on the circumstances, but not OK to omit quotation marks around some non-substantive descriptive passages copied from other academic works. But that's old news now.
But then there's the secondarily ridiculous fact that some news outlet is trying to pull the same trick on the wife of one of the guys responsible for the original plagiarism issue.
I mean yeah, great, let's hold highly-paid superstar academics to high standards. If these examples are really on par with what Gay did, and with what would get a student kicked out of Harvard, then yes, anyone who wrote something like this should face consequences.
But is that really what's going on? Does the Business Insider editorial board all of a sudden care so deeply about academic honesty?

I think it: "it's 2024 and weaponized whataboutism is fair play"
Is this really on hn...
Academic honesty is a big topic right now. It's a trashy headline, but the story itself is definitely interesting.
What's actually bad is that "Business Insider" themselves did this investigation. Compare the breathless hysteria of this announcement to the careful and sober work done by Data Colada on the work of Gino and Ariely.

AI generated plagiarism detectors are going to have to get better. Even Claudine Gay’s own allegations weren’t completely accurately plagiarism because they ranged from insufficient rewording to - yes - unquoted passages. So if she can claim that the quotations weren’t accurate or the citations weren’t appropriate, then…it really is all for grabs if “academic meta-journalism” is just a high level google search right now.
None of which ever really challenged her work overall or conclusions or points she substantiated. Which should be the total point.
