Group 1: Some people think about it and don’t have kids,

Group 2 some think about it and do,

Group 3 and some don’t think about it much and are (probably) more likely to end up with a kid than group 1 because most people like having sex and this group will be less careful than group 1.

For all the people complaining about driver distraction alerts… have you considered that perhaps you were in fact distracted? Looking at a passenger to talk instead of at the road, etc?

It’s the kind of thing where, unless you’re way below the median, other people will hesitate to call you out on it.

Personal freedom to drive a two tonne battering ram at deadly speeds where others are walking, biking, etc should be heavily regulated.

I like Germany, studied German a bit in college, etc but when my family and I decided to move somewhere that suited us because we could work from anywhere Germany really failed to impress. We ended up in the Netherlands which offers a a lot of the perks people associate with Germany (perhaps wrongly, good trains were one of the things we wanted) without as many of the downsides.

As far as I’m aware a lot of noise was made about a 28th Regime “eu-inc” and not much happened. It’s still a pain in the ass to start a company in too many places (albeit not all).

Ironically having kids motivated us to live somewhere we could be car free, which is a pretty major reduction in consumption.

I think your view is… skewed… but also, remember that many parents are not, in fact, in America.

Would lockdown mode on iOS stop this?

"have infants ricocheting around your home like screaming DVD logos, then you may want to put this ambition aside for now and deal with that instead"

Even older kids... my 6 year old is jumping on the couch as I type this..

I like remote work but when I had to commute it was really nice to have that downtime built in to the day. I learned a lot of Dutch vocabulary on the train.

That's a good point, and AI makes this worse unfortunately. I realized a while ago I spend more time taking pictures than I even do looking at them, and quit worrying so much about saving everything. As they say, all these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. On the other hand, it's a memory of an internet that no longer exists, and that I think a lot of people (myself included) miss dearly.

I do suspect a lot of things weren't deliberately taken down so much as just not maintained, though.

I get that but in all seriousness if they're saying "the free market" doesn't provide what people want it's worth asking if most people (remember, not HN readers) actually want 25 Gbit internet.

Crazy idea but...

Do I _need_ 25 Gb internet? Even when I had 1 Gb I never saturated the connection.

The cachet of "Swiss" products is a lot higher than US. (Whether this is merited is another question entirely)

No idea where they are but when I had a very cheap house in Ireland the property taxes were only a bit over €100 per year.

Yes! Please yes! I’d love to see more homes built in my town near Utrecht and have supported plans to do so. It’s idyllic and we should try to help more people who want to live like this be able to do so.

Ironically my childhood home in California has a Dutch family living in it. Small world.

Arguably this is the reason it should be borne by the government, not companies. This is one option https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexicurity

Well I suppose Europe can start its own manzanar if it comes to it.

Emigrants aren’t really known for their patriotism.
