Make no mistake. Shoving user-hostile malware down people's throats is the primary use case for this in the consumer space. Bootloader malware is very esoteric right now. Enterprise might have valid use cases beyond screwing people but none of them make sense for a consumer device.

Online banking is a thing. A heck of a lot more secure than an app on a certified android device passing play integrity but having last received security updates years ago and with a ton of privilege escalation exploits. Gov id? Just say no.

You used to be able to buy songs on iTunes and burn them to CD. Why would the expectation for movies be any different?

Bullshit, it's perfectly fine and legal to refuse to give companies your address or SSN.

Google syphons all your email data and uses it for their very profitable ad targeting business. The cost of providing email service is miniscule, especially nowadays. Ad profits are at record highs. They've done their math for sure. Saying that they somehow got roped into subsidizing a public service is not even close to reality.

No. This is a bad solution. You can't blame consumers for not making the right choice when there's a sea of irreparable junk and a few niche repairable options on the market. Reparability should be the default expectation.

Last I checked the Epic Games Store doesn't even support Linux - the new gaming frontier.

Unfortunately Steam decks have been out of stock for a while. The AI slop Apocalypse ruined the consumer computing market with chip shortages.

No surprise there, Discord sells user data to Meta and X.

Does it still require wiping your drive and enabling developer mode to install software outside the Play Store like ChromeOS does? DOA if so.

iPhones will transmit bluetooth beacons even if turned off. Fortunately the battery goes completely flat after a couple of weeks or so and then they no longer do. Unfortunately this is not very healthy for the battery.

Indeed. Never spend your own money on work related expenses. If your job requires a phone, they need to provide one.

Perhaps an NFC smart card you can carry in your wallet or phone case :)

Yeah, I'd rather read a 2 minute article than have someone stretch the explanation to 10 minutes for ad revenue or the algorithm or whatever the current YouTube enshitrification meta is.

Never connect a smart TV to the internet. That's how they get you.

I was gifted an iPad for Christmas a few years back and quickly found out there's nothing you can do on it without either looking at ads or paying a subscription. I returned it before the factory battery charge ran out.

Their TVs will connect to open networks without asking you. Perhaps the fridges do the same.

Yes, software on F-droid is free and reviewed for anti-features before publishing. Google Play has the worst, ad ridden, dark pattern filled, data guzzling, subscription packed, commercial slop with no real oversight on what gets published. Malware frequently gets on the Play Store, never heard of it being a problem on F-Droid.

I've found AM4/AM5 boards will still boot Linux without a discrete or integrated GPU, running a GPUless CPU, not an APU.
