I worked on Half-Life mods with friends I met in IRC in the late 90's - so about 13 onwards. We "released" stuff to forums all the time, though very few updates ever got released.

Less interesting stuff like basic save game editors too.

I am engaging with why group A wins: they win because the emotional prior is doing most of the work, not because the underlying argument necessarily has merit.

I don't think I agree - "think of the children" is not primarily a rational argument, it's more an emotional and political lever that is used to frame anyone in opposition as being opposed to more child safety, which is very obviously a bad thing.

It creates a moral asymmetry where one group is "defending children" and another group is "defending an abstract concept", but group A wins out primarily due to millions of years of human evolution. It has very little (IMO) to do with the actual underlying concepts being debated.

Where’s the baseline? Most projects I’ve ever started since I was a teenager have been abandoned within months of release.

Try using it as an agent to perform black box security testing on a live instance of your codebase (assuming it's a hosted service).

It's a good reason to not tie your company's success to US based hosted AI though. I've started experimenting with GLM 5.2 and other than the tooling needing a lot more setup once you're there it works pretty well.

I'm hoping that some relatively cost-effective self-hosting solutions come about as a result of Hopper hardware being sold off as they're retired from DC use.

So where does the necessity to install multiple 15A circuits come from?

That’s a uniquely US issue - in NZ you can get a 100A single phase at 230V nominal without any issue. 23kw, straight to your door.

A single circuit using 10mm TPS would technically be enough to run what you’re describing. Might be pricey though, I’d probably take the excuse to get 3 phase installed so I could get access to the stock of used 3 phase machinery.

Depends how much you value privacy and running uncensored models.

Personally, I’m waiting for hardware to hit the secondary market before I buy something to run unquantized models like GLM. But I have no doubt that I will, at some point.

Works on our staging and production environments, but the feedback loop is too long for development. I mean, if it was literally the only way then we’d live with it, but ensuring everyone is using the same version is enough.

No, it won’t. The internet is just getting smaller from my perspective because there’s no way I’m handing over my identification and allowing every connection made to a server to be tracked back to me.

It’s simply not on the cards, and I live a frugal enough life in a high paying industry that I can retire in a few years. If I was willing to bank on inheritance then I could retire now.

I feel for the people that are forced to engage though. But too many of them simply don’t care about privacy, which is why we’re here.

And those darned printing presses distributing works that were written prior to their existence.

One person upgrading terraform can break the state format for backwards compatibility. We use direnv with asdf to ensure everyone is in the same version now.

I also wonder if being able to prove that an image or video isn’t AI generated would lend credence to it, while in reality there are other methods to produce falsified video.

“A ditch” and “this ditch specifically” are two entirely separate concepts.

I’m waiting to see what they come up with for the Motorola partnership. Hopefully it’s interesting.

I rode my motorcycle into a hole that almost swallowed the front tyre entirely in rural Australia. That hole had just been a slight depression that collected water the last time I rode through it, and there was no visual indication that it was now deeper.

I've used an ultrasonic sensor to detect the water level in a tank before, I don't think it would work as you describe.

Also, the sensor didn't work in that context either as condensation kept forming on it.
