That, and I remember years ago, someone claimed their cryptocurrency was stolen while their Apple laptop was in for repairs (wallet unencrypted on the laptop).

I just tried Bitlocker for the first time a few days ago. I enabled it, and next time I booted it up, it never asked for my password. It turns out it only protects the drive if it's removed from the computer.

I just used VeraCrypt instead.

A more apt comparison would be if OP was hit by a drunk driver, and there were no laws against drunk driving. It would be appropriate to ask the government to investigate whether or not drunk driving is safe, because it could happen to many more people.

They also protect visiting foreign dignitaries.

And they get to use more exciting/expensive tools that would otherwise be illegal for private citizens/companies to use.
