No previous talks about seeking a large company to boost them to the next level. No rumors they may sell. It quite literally was, first come, first serve.
Now we all know FB has to get value back out of this... Its an investment. Being a tech company investment, we can presume FB is looking for a short-term return, ie. <5 years. How will they do it? By selling your privacy of course... Its FB's model.
How about the gross over-valuation of startup companies? $15 billion for an instant messaging application? $2 billion for a research company without a product? Both companies should have sold for, maybe a few hundred million, at most.
This is unsustainable in and of itself (and possibly irresponsible). Not to mention awful for the startup market (causing a startup valuation bubble).
Facebook obviously has to make money back from these purchases. Both purchases are technology companies, and therefore Facebook is likely in it short-term, meaning they hope to make their money back in < 5 years.
How will they do it? Well, by doing what Facebook does best, selling your privacy.
Seems like the first big company to wave cash in their face... Sold! -- what a pathetic sellout.
I, for one, will not have any device in my life which is associated with Facebook. If another big company had bought Oculus, I would feel different. I mean... Facebook has nothing to do with VR, gaming, etc. They obviously bought it in hopes of mining data one day.
How about we all just treat people like people. It doesn't matter if you are a man or woman, your respect in the community should be based on merit. There are plenty of terrible male executives, and there are also plenty of terrible female executives.
I'll probably get downvotes for this... but the one thing that annoys me is when someone plays one of the "cards", be it sexism, racism, etc. I've been around long enough to feel if you play a "card", then you have no merit (or just lost it all).
I may be in the minority, but in the business roles I've filled over the years, I've always had complete disregard to an employee's gender or skin color... it's irrelevant, if you are the best fit for the job/project, then you're the best fit. Plain and simple.
On the flip-side, employees should understand that just because they feel they are more qualified for a task, but were not rewarded with it... it does not instantly mean they were discriminated against -- usually the contrary. (Very few people are bigots, yet, the few ruin the bunch so-to-speak).
If you have ever played an instrument in a symphonic band and/or symphony, it's very easy to understand the fundamental role of the conductor (I played trumpet in one for years). I guess for others, not so much...
Possible parallel would be to that of a CEO at a big corporation. The CEO (conductor) guides the business (symphony), sets the tempo of business (song), knows when to slow down or speed up and when to adjust dynamics in association to the market (the audience).
Holder was not prosecuted further because Obama clamped down with Executive Privilege -- preventing any further inquiry (but also basically admitting something wrong was going on)
People are quick to go down the rabbit hole and say he's a "traitor" because he fled to Russia... these are the same people who are all caught up in our Presidentially Manufactured Political-Beef with Russia in Ukraine.
Snowden is in Russia because it is the only country in this world that would stand up to the USA and say "no" to deportation requests.
We witnessed just how far USA is willing to strong-arm the international community -- even going so far to force-ground a Presidential Plane from Bolivia and then search his plane. -- That is outrageous.
Snowden should be brought back to the USA -- after a full Presidential Pardon, and then made into the first in-house US Spy Agency Watch Dog - reporting only to the American People, and the President.
I could not agree more. Our President decides to pick a political bone so our space industry suffers. (Oh ya, it's the same President that decimated the NASA budget! -- In the name of science!)
* I can create my own docker binary from scratch without needing to use a black-box magic binary provided by the docker project.
* When I can create my own base images from scratch (using detailed instructions of how and why, not just some pre-made script in the docker repo with no explanation).
* When I can maintain my images off of the docker repository, ie. my own server becomes my repo for my images.
* Docker is not "enterprise ready" just because the project declares it to be and adds a 1.0 version marker... it will take years of solid versions, low security problems, and high stability before it can be accepted into enterprise as more than a pet project.
* Docker is just an abstraction layer over-top of LXC - and therefore will not become the "standard" since anyone can implement their own abstraction layer and compete, and they will. (look at the Xen project and the KVM project -- there are a great many 3rd party user tools, management tools, abstraction layers, scripts, etc. The same will become of LXC and docker will become just one of the options).
* The half-baked git syntax is just annoying. Sometimes docker commands are like using git, other times they are like using a package manager. Stick with one work-flow please.
I agree. There's a lot that can go wrong with a Floppy, as well as it's reader. Also the quote about the analog phones being "unreliable" seems suspect...

What? We stopped using Floppies for more than just storage space guys, they had fundamental longevity problems. A simple CD upgrade of flash drive that's write-locked after created would go a long ways.
What about the readers themselves? Do they have some company special making 8" Floppy readers and are swapping them every so many years to ensure they will actually read the floppy correctly when it's go-time?
Simply using really old tech doesn't make it more secure...
