I think there's a political bias at play - fake news is usually attributed to the Right, and HN seems to be a lose coalition of progressives, neoliberals, and a few hard left who all dislike the Right.

People can get blind about things that achieve their goals

You're both right because you're talking about local laws and GP is talking about the post-war order, which is held together by American hegemony. I have a feeling that the majority of the commenters here would not be happy with the results of an armed revolution. You can be snarky on the internet all you want, but guns win wars, and there's a hell of a lot more guns in Texas than California.

Hell, if you want to go down a very concerning rabbit hole, look up youtube videos of people prepping for a communist revolution. There's a lot of mass murder pre-planned for the end of democracy.

Who are these people? Is this just satire? Am I just getting old, and no one cares about freedom to disagree, debate, etc? Do people not have historical context about suppressing dissenting opinions, even if you hate them?

This is cool, even if edgy. What are some other interesting licenses? Is there a fascist only license? What about anti-communist licenses, or licenses only for communists?

Can I license my project ONLY to one ethnicity or religion? I know you can be discriminatory for clubs, like YMCA used to be, or the JCC, but can you be for IP?

Austin is a huge tech town, and rapidly growing. I get a lot of recruiter emails to go there. Same with KC, but to a lessor extent.

I was just in Montreal - the difference in prices with the US was staggering. You forget how wealthy we are, sometimes, even compared to the rest of the developed world. (Had an incredible French meal with 2 bottles of wine over 3 hours and it came out to ~$90 a head American)

Agreed. The whole point of elections are not to elect perfect people - they are a revolution, every two years. Trump might not be perfect, but he's a lot better than people in Wisconsin having to rise up against people in California. It's likely that in 2020, the people of {Insert Swing State Here} will not violently murder the president, like they had to during the French Revolution, but will instead vote him out of office.

There's a reason the preponderance of his examples came from countries that were transitioning to democracies, and there are very few examples of violent overthrowing of democratically elected governments.

I don't see a top level comment mentioning this, but what if UBI just doesn't work? That's certainly possible - that it works seems to be taken as a given, and evidence against that seems to be dismissed frequently in this thread.

A lot of things that work seem like they shouldn't (flight, capitalism) even after a lot of consideration - similarly, a lot of things that don't work seem like they should (Mendelian genetics). Maybe this unfortunately just doesn't work?

They'll probably be put back together by Colombia, who's in pretty good shape these days.

The US will probably see another batch of very conservative Hispanics like we saw with Cuba. The Venezuelans I've met lately don't exactly love socialism.

This is kind of meandering, and it loses the thread a bit in the end (it feels like he's getting to a point he's uncomfortable with ideologically), but it's extremely accurate. The bigger point about creating the future - that he seems to miss - is that it's a future _not everyone wants_, which drives a huge part of the "maga/bernie" divide he discusses.

He is right though - the rate of downward mobility among my young, bourgeoisie 20-somethings friends in NYC is shocking. 90%+ of my friends don't save anything, but take elaborate vacations several times a year, or go to multiple, expensive festivals. I have no idea what most of them would do if they lost their jobs. One of my friends quit their job and instantly is poor. They spent 3 weeks in Europe a month ago. He really hits the nail on the head in exploring their motivations, in my opinion.

The idea that you can afford a house and a boat and time with your kids on a single upper middle class income in, say, Missouri is called "normal" outside of SF/NYC.

Probably not a huge issue - look up first home language in Texas or Arizona. Texas is also like 50%+ Hispanic, and I can't imagine the modern GOP being anti-Texas.

Does anyone else deeply distrust Vox? The quality varies a LOT, they frequently present opinions as facts, etc.

The weird thing is they have moments of brilliance like the "Liberal Smugness" piece - but search "Vox News article" and it looks like even the left really hates them.

They seem more interested in telling me how to feel than the facts, I guess. I wish the rest of the world had the same pride in journalism as say, the Economist or the New Yorker

I don't think reddit's problem is harassment, I think it's groupthink, extremely low quality/uninformed discourse, and brigading. I wish that there was a site with an hn-level of moderation that covered issues like bikes, local news, etc. Maybe that's just not possible?

I really love how self-enforcing the community is here towards snark and lazy comments, which have absolutely destroyed Reddit. Edginess is much easier than proper discussion.
