Where does that end? Go make your own domain registrar? Go make your own ICANN? Go make your own ISP? Go make your own internet? Go make your own microchips?

If some virtue signaling Silicon Valley execs want to impress their friends, you're done.

Oligarchy. Has nothing to do with capitalism or democracy. It has to do with internet points and social standing for elite tech executives.

Looks far more like McCarthyism or totalitarianism than anything resembling a free democracy.

After WWII when the Soviets took control of nations like Poland, they didn't flat out ban free speech.

But they did make sure only the communist-aligned outlets had unlimited access to paper.

Like so many censorship-happy people today, the USSR could also say that the government wasn't censoring speech. They were only controlling paper.

Both companies are owned by BBVA USA. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more banks shuttering under BBVA.

I'm happy to hear Google is charging for ReCAPTCHA. I hope they make it completely unaffordable and get rid of any free tier.

Any disincentive for sites to force users to train AI for Google is a good thing.

Every time I run into it, it makes me hate the site I'm on. Google punishes my crimes of Firefox use and not being logged into Google by giving challenge after challenge - along with those infuriating "slow fade in" images to take bigger bites out of my day.

The world would be better off without ReCAPTCHA.

I get that this is aggravating, but I think the hyperbolic hammering on the event that's presumably about promoting open source is misguided.

Opt-in could help. So could better access control tools from GitHub.

DO could make it so that users have to use a specific tag on the PRs; there are tons of ways maintainers could filter on that.

DO could switch the prizes to be something less likely to draw spam than a t-shirt would - like free cloud resources.

TLDR; in the spirit of software - let's iterate on this imperfect event instead of junking it outright.

Funny how an article popped up on HN last week that mentioned table inheritance in a list of obscure Postgres features you should try out.

If I'd read this first, I wouldn't have wasted Saturday finding out for myself why you shouldn't use it.
