This is true. I was hoping my educated guess of the outcome would minimize the possibility of anyone attempting this. And yet, here we are - the only losing strategy in the technology sector is to not try at all.

Very unusual comment.

I do not think so as the chance of constructing a fleshy eldritch horror is quite high.

I found this interesting. On both the Chrome blog and this EFF post, there is a quote from AdGuard CTO Andrey Meshkov. One of the quotes is favorable/neutral toward Google, while the other is more negative. It sounds like Meshkov may have changed his opinion.

Google blog ( https://developer.chrome.com/blog/resuming-the-transition-to... )

"As always, migrating to a new platform is a large undertaking, but we're very hopeful..."

EFF blog ( https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/12/chrome-users-beware-ma... ) - sourced from AdGuard blog ( https://adguard.com/en/blog/manifestv3-timeline.html )

"Nearly all browser extensions as you know them today will be affected in some way..."

Too difficult, some are actually both!

Try searching for Yamaha FX-1, it is both a home organ and a jet ski.

Correct me if I'm wrong but (1+i)^2 = 2i is false? I thought it is = (i^2)+2i+1

An excellent software project, preservation is a personal favorite ;). I had a look over the blog and GitHub project - but I have one important question that I could not find an answer for: "Which version of macOS is targeted?"

I would assume only the latest or near-latest version, though it is mentioned in this post that they were only recently able to sync source code up to macOS 11.5 (from August 2021).

My theories: either they aim to support a wide array of macOS versions (like Wine), or adopt a "moving target" approach, removing old code and stubs that handle old/removed Mac functions.

I am leaning towards my second theory, as it was mentioned in issue #1337 (heh) that Darwin does not have a stable ABI. That sounds to me like an app built for 10.7 Lion would not run at all on 10.14 Mojave... something that is probably true for real Macs as well.

This is referred to as "Gut-wrenching scream". Apologies in advance for the fandom.com link, I know the site is cluttered. There is valuable research here though:

https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/Hollywoodedge,_Screams_...

The original recording date here is 1978, though it was not used until 1980. The rights to this sound started with Soundelux, then passed onto Hollywood Edge, and finally Sound Ideas (who bought Hollywood Edge in 2014).

One of the most notable sound effects in TV and movies ("the Wilhelm scream") here can be found from SSE Library Voices:

https://archive.org/details/SSE_Library_VOICES

Listed as VOXScrm_Man eaten by alligator; screams [Wilhelm_CS_USC.

You may be already aware of this, but macOS Ventura (maybe earlier versions too) changed System Preferences to work more similarly to iOS. Lots of scrolling and nearly all the checkboxes are toggle switches.

I think it's a reference to Serial Experiments Lain. Did not even look that one up.

Not currently. The website has this snippet of information:

Note that the app binary must be decrypted to be usable. Also note that you can’t directly use .ipa files right now, you’ll need to unzip it (this may be easier if you rename it to end in .zip first) and get the .app bundle out of it.

I think a similar style is the Tones.fm website (https://tones.fm). I recall it was even posted on this site when it first launched, many years back

i'd say the overlap between hn readers and avid music listeners isn't too large. but there are also a few other instances of memento mori: see the Apple Music radio playlist hosted by The Weeknd, and the year-long YouTube channel that was hosted by Markiplier and CrankGameplays (Unus Annus, latin for one year)

iOS 10 is definitely not 10 years old but it is nearing 6 years. For the iOS ecosystem, even iOS 13 is kinda old.

If you somehow stumbled onto this post, check here instead!: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30071442

It links to the actual Google post and has more comments. Guess I was too eager to post that I forgot about context!

Slowdive and Beach House both have pages on Bandcamp. They're pretty popular though so sorry if you already knew this.

Aside from various coats of paint, the Chrome tab UI is still the same. Which I'm thankful for. Firefox has gone through a few redesigns lately; Australis, Photon, and Proton (latest)
