I just interviewed with GH and they claimed MS hasn’t interfered, having learned lessons from earlier buyouts.
Sounds like it was more of a goodwill gesture to stabilize a resource important to the internet.
Tbh LinkedIn could very well have bubbled this up if their culture was untouched. Never really seemed like much more than Facebook curated for professional profile content. Pretty like minded sort of snooping, IMO.
Not saying MS isn’t interfering and GH is selling a line. Also no evidence this isn’t just LinkedIn hiring the same kind of people. They’re kind of all over.
Honestly, I use search engines very little anymore.
SEO games make them almost useless to me. Certain well curated Reddit feeds, and sources where it looks like people give a toss is my preference. IRC, Slack, Discord communities are real time with a person, and probably “better” for discovery.
Let’s throw thousands of years of social evolution in the bin cause some billionaires can afford a lot of computers and exorbitant wages to have unscrupulous randos monopolize our exposure to the world. Ok
Same with FB, Twitter; I’m not finding a need to connect to everyone over their cat pic firehose, and the noise.
Edit: email works great for connecting to academics all over. Networking isn’t just through LinkedIn (which I also don’t use), and Upwork, or www at all. It’s just one of numerous conventions.
Agreed, that’s an overly reductionist way of seeking a resolution.
I say focus on worker capture.
The only “market” Adam Smith mentioned is a free labor market, which is free by its ability to move between offers fluidly.
We have that to an extent in tech but not really and it’s hardly pervasive.
If the problem is the billions to influence culture, IMO its employee culture spend that’s the biggest downside to monoliths.
Wealth-caring becomes the corporate mantra. Or Jesus in the old days. It’s clear there is a biological addiction to privatized monoliths boxing in agency to fetishizing the monolith, by tickling our limbic brain just right and repeating “New trend we’re selling!” all day.
