they could still calculate their profit margin: cost to build all their free SDK / profit from app store. Seems quite simple. Why would you believe them that they are not able to perform this calculation?
Migrations have to be backwards compatible so the DB schema can serve both versions of the app. It's an extra price to pay for having ZDD or rolling deployments and something to keep in mind. But it's generally done by all the larger companies
I think the author was trying to point out that one way to triage or to identify what actually are the essential requirements is to half-ass it and see the results.
