Really useful when searching for office space or apartments. I can recall many friends who get a great lease on an office only to find they have really slow internet available for their startup.
Im curious, what percent of user accounts are over a year old vs not?
Also, do accounts with higher karma boost up a story more?
Im wondering if the reason why the two lists are very similar is that the old users inherently have a high weight (in terms of number of accounts and karma power) on the normal page already.
This app isnt meant to dim the screen. It changes the color temperature of the monitor to a warmer setting. Its like the difference between a fluorescent and a regular incandescent light.
I would wholeheartedly agree. None of the Launchbox advisors are/were hackers and they all tend towards business end of the spectrum. There are pro's and con's to each type of advisor. YC is lucky because PG is good on both sides. Only time will tell how the business side leaning will fair for LaunchBox.
Just because the LaunchBox advisors dont have public personas doesn't mean they are bad advisors. In fact they are all extremely sharp, well connected and have quite a lot of experience in the space.
I will agree that without the public personas its much harder to build a culture and community like HackerNews around the program. But I dont think thats the goal of LaunchBox. In fact I think all the LaunchBox companies hang out on HN because its the best community of its kind out there.
Im one of the JamLegend guys, glad you are excited about it. We definitely want to get the Rock Band drums working, although we honestly haven't tried hooking them up yet. We got the Wii Guitar Hero controller working in no time using bluetooth.
UPDATE: So I discovered the reason why the bouncing ball didn't seem to smooth, yet people insisted that it should be.
It seems that Flash for Mac is much slower at rendering than Flash for PC. The same file with a target fps of 100 runs at around 60fps on my dual core 2.16ghz mac, but runs at 98fps on a 1.7ghz single core PC.
I guess it makes sense that Adobe spent all their time optimizing the PC version.
Wow, I think Robokill might have sold me on how smooth graphics with Flex can actually be.
I posted earlier about how I made one ball bounce around the screen in Flash and it wasnt silky smooth, but the polish on Robokill looks fantastic.
Any tips/tricks for Flex game development? Are there any game frameworks? My previous Flex work was a RIA and it seemed that Flex took care of all the frame drawing for me, do you handle things any differently when making games (ie something like bitblt)?
So my only issue with Flash/Flex is performance. They are both amazingly easy to use, but even just making a simple ball that bounces around the screen pong style isnt silky smooth. (The framerate is set at 60) Im worried that if just one ball isnt silky smooth, 100 objects moving at the same time would look bad.
Based on the nature of the game I am developing timing needs to be very precise, Im also very picky about choppy graphics.
This is overly simplified, but I think it gets the point across.
In baseball offensive players advance from base to base every time they successfully hit the ball and keep it away from the defense. If the batter (the one who hits the ball) hits the ball well he will go to first base, if he does an even better job he will make it to second base. If even better than that he can make it to third base. The best scenario is if he hit a home run which allows him to run past third base to the home base and score a point.
The analogy is that you can play it safe and go for first base (less risk but less reward) or swing as hard as you can and go for a home run (high risk, high reward). Although it is not as glamourous as hitting a home run, hitting base hit after base hit is a steady way to win a baseball game.
