As a host I can confirm. 3 days ago I had March 100% booked. Yesterday the entire 2nd half of the month was empty. I slashed prices and bookings are starting to trickle back in. April is looking really lean, though, and May has multiple bookings from European citizens. It’s only money, not health, but the economic impact of COV-19 seems immense.
Shea Serrano is a writer for The Ringer. He’s not rich, but he’s doing fine (has written a couple books). However it went to another level in my mind when his followers started paying each other’s bills midway through the thread.
Contradiction? You’re too kind, he’s a straight up hypocrite. He used “privacy” to kill Gawker, in part because he didn’t like their coverage of his ventures.
If you think you can convince him not to pull the trigger. I’d rather be standing at ground zero. Dying of radiation poisoning is an experience I don’t need to see to believe.
My father in law was at the bikini islands for the test runs (died of cancer), my great uncle was on the ground in Japan shorty after they dropped Hiroshima (died of cancer), and great uncle’s kids has Japanese rifles he recovered from sites that glowed in the dark as late as the mid 70s.
Clean water is an exponentially larger problem than any single disease. From Flint, MI to Malawi, no one is going to listen to any aid worker about anything else if they’re dying due to lack of clean drinking water.
Just don’t piss him off. Just got done reading “Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue.” Starts a bit slow and pretentious, but once it gets going... I dislike Thiel immensely, but hole-lee-shit he pulled off one of the most complicated, ruthless, and complete revenge plots I’ve ever heard of. That he kept secret for NINE YEARS while planning and executing (quite literally) his scheme.
Even if you know the story well, the book is worth a read or listen.
Yeah, the first peak around Feb 1 is almost a mirror image of tax day. You could load up for first peak, ramp down for the trough, then load back up again for the “deadline” (not actually a deadline). But you’re taking about 100s of times more scale, not 10s.
Trust Me I’m Lying by Ryan Holiday is the definitive text on the subject IMO, published in 2013. Some of the examples the author uses involve manipulating humans here on HN to distort reality, in most cases for free press, shares, and back links.
Long, but great pod. Patrick Collison and Ezra Klein discuss:
- Innovating in highly regulated markets
- Breaking into well established markets by challenging assumptions, fine tuning product experience, and using lean startup principles
- Using time horizons strategically... The discussion about Jeff Bezos "simply willing to wait longer than your competitors" at 1:12 in really resonated with me.
- Building company culture
- Avoiding group think
TaxAct | Cedar Rapids, IA and Irving, TX | Product Manager
TaxAct is the 3rd largest provider of DIY tax software, competing with Intuit's TurboTax and H&R Block. I just started as VP of Product and I'm hiring two product managers to join my team and reinvent tax software, one in Cedar Rapids and one in Irving. I would consider remote with travel for the right candidates.
