H1 tightening is suggested as a reason for reduction in house prices in SV ... the uncertainty keeps folks from making the commitment. Prices of course are still high in the valley but multiple offers outside of a few cities are a thing of the past
Anecdotal but I have recently noticed a spurt in ‘retained’ workers for dot-net, Java, and ‘open source’ work in India for anywhere from 2100 to 2800 dollars a month. Maybe this is more for small companies but those small business owners couldn’t dream of hiring someone for twice as much than that even in rural US (and no benefits or payroll and easy increase or reduction in the strength). Outsourcing and automation are way more powerful forces pressuring down salaries, whatever the visa regime (and constantly competing against each other too)
It depends on where in the AI lifecycle we are ... I believe we are still barely scratching the surface and mostly using it to solve old problems. This ‘race’ could just help improve the field enough that we can get to some real fun stuff!
That would always be a problem though, right? So for unmanned moon landings, do we instead need those inflated bouncy balls? Or did the previous successes just got it right?
What do we think went wrong? I expect maths to be right but there was a comment somewhere about the regolith with fine particles whose specific composition could have caused unexpected dust clouds as the lander sped to the ground ... how was this tech different from the other 3 successes?
Memory is foggy and I don't have a citation but didn't the definition of literacy in India just involved the ability to read/write your name (officially by govt)? I wouldn't be surprised if a significant percentage was functionally illiterate - that doesn't mean they aren't smart though - likely smarter than the author :)
Maybe the illustrious members of HN should stick to their strengths and come up with a technological solution to the following two:
- how can a nation achieve equivalent ability as this without actually destroying a satellite
- how can such debris be rendered harmless
I remember when my 7 year old got into it and the experience was amazingly similar ... then I found that the newly learnt swear words came from those videos. If it weren’t for the gratuitous language in the article too, I’d have loved to get him to read it!
