There was a lot of depression-era frugality and Macgyver-level fixes in my home growing up. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel as if I've unwittingly internalized certain habits ;)
Toptal is a network that connects clients with the world's top freelance talent. There are a lot of open SWE jobs in the network right now. You can choose your own rate and take on as many (or as few) jobs as you'd like. There are hourly, part-time, and full-time positions, so you can choose the commitment that suits your needs (I'm primarily part-time because it makes sense for my schedule).
A few years back I was working full-time (on prem) and wanted to make some extra income, so I decided to try Toptal. It took me a few tries to get in, but shortly after joining I landed a 5hr/week gig at a decent starting rate! Woohoo! I was able to use this extra money to relocate, go fully remote, and also get better part-time gigs through Toptal.
There's gigs from 5-10 hrs/week, but also 20-30 hrs/week jobs. That's honestly kind of the sweet spot, because you could theoretically just get paid better to work less hours...
