Thanks! We actually found a really good adviser that is a general contractor in the area which has been super helpful. He's definitely ahead of the curve in terms of technology adoption in this space but we all feel this is where things are heading.

Uber doesn't make enough from fares to be profitable, they use investors' money to heavily subsidize them. Once the investor money runs out, Uber won't be able to pay drivers unless they jack up prices considerably. Once they are no longer price competitive, customers will move to other services.

Turns out the car service business isn't very sticky at all (even the drivers work for multiple companies...). Drivers start to leave and the downward spiral begins. They just couldn't get to self driving vehicles fast enough - which may be why they were trying to borrow technology from Google.

I'm pretty sure Amazon already does this - prices are different based on your location and purchase history at the very least. Sometimes its obvious but other times they will just push a different seller to the top of the list which effectively changes the price. You can chalk it up to their 'dynamic pricing' but it always seems to favor me over my wife (the majority of our purchases go through my account).

I've been a part of many usability studies with 'drag and drop' editors and as easy as we tried and make it, it was still coding. People with coding experience do well, people without coding experience struggle. The other interesting thing we learned is that the macro writer and macro user are very often not the same person. Power users create macros that other users then take advantage of. Needing a physical hardware device for these types of macros might make this type of sharing much harder.

Unfortunately that is also the case with Angular v2. The API surface is enormous.

Not yet. Seems like there is a loose plan to start implementing some of those optimizations once fiber lands in React 16.

Would be great if you took a few minutes to improve the article then. Reducing the cultural bias of Wikipedia happens the same way as improving Wikipedia in general, one article at a time.

Totally agree. I really don't get how anybody can take a look at the mess at https://angular.io/docs/js/latest/api/ and think to themselves, yep - that's for me! Our first version was done in Angular v1 and we bit the bullet and converted over to React and never looked back.

No more factories, or dependency injection, or crazy template language that is never quite expressive enough, and no more digest cycles to optimize.

Step 1 would be to stop driving like a maniac. Otherwise since there have been 13 deaths for millions of air bags, probably still safer to leave it activated. The chance of serious injury from your head striking the steering column is still significantly larger than shrapnel from a defective air bag injuring you.

Has anybody figured out how you do caching and cache invalidation on the client with GraphQL if every page is requesting slightly different forms of the same data? Seems like it is a bigger win to just download the 400 friends once and let the pages use the data they need instead of downloading the 400 friends 10 different ways.

My particular app is read heavy and so I can eliminate the majority of the server calls altogether via caching. While GraphQL would help me fetch only the data I need on each page and decouple the data access, I don't see how I reuse objects across pages without interrogating the GraphQL queries. I haven't given it all that much thought though so maybe I'm missing something.

There are a couple of other companies here that didn't make your list... not including the pretty active startup scene. Sure it's not any near as vibrant as around San Francisco but to say there are only two tech companies hiring people is pretty ludicrous.

I went through a similar experience with our code base and saw similar results. Our project is quite a bit larger (some 20k loc) but converting it to React has been a huge win. Performance has improved without all the custom code needed in Angular, bugs are easier to find and fix, and reasoning about the code is a ton simpler. I hate to think about all the time we spent trying to optimize the Angular digest cycle... .

We also discovered that since writing components is so much easier in React than with Angular 1.5 we tend to write a lot more of them. This makes the components easier to test and has greatly improved reuse across the code base. Which in turn makes adding features possible that would have destabilized the old code base.

I did look at Angular 2 and just saw more of the same and didn't want to deal with it anymore. I found that I personally aligned well with the React ecosystem (Redux, JSX, CSS in Javascript) which probably colored some of my decision.

I wasn't saying anybody can become competent in it (and have no opinion on your particular point), but anybody can definitely try it out to see if they enjoy it. It has an extremely low barrier to entry compared to a lot of other majors.

If you're not technical enough to type 'learn to program' into Google then I'm not sure how far you'll make it into a CS program. Back in the 80's and early 90's, sure it was a struggle. I remember reading out of date BASIC books trying to figure out how to load my code from floppies, now that was a bit of a headache.

These days you can be be learning to code using any number of slick web sites in about 5 minutes.
