I have just looked into Estonian e-residency. The idea was that the Estonian government would establish a legal framework, which they did, and that Estonian service providers would take it from there, which they didn't. Hence, you would be no more "e-resident" of Estonia than of other countries, just by entering that programme. In fact, other countries, such as even the UK, have better and more convenient programmes for this, which enjoy better support in general.

Besides the existence of some youtube videos, there is no other evidence that this "daesh" is truly an organization and not just an arbitrary amalgamation of people who share particular symbols or subscribe to particular views. The insurgencies in Iraq and Syria are more correctly classified as violent civilian unrest with gangs taking over particular functions from a discredited Syrian goverment. Putting videos on youtube does not turn any of that into an "organization".

For any accusation of imminent lawless action, the prosecution must indicate the reasonably precise time and place where this was supposed to take place. Otherwise, it becomes too easy to accuse everybody and their little sister of plotting that kind of things. The suspect may have sympathies for the ongoing insurgencies in Iraq and Syria, but that is not a valid reason to attack this person for studying the math theorems of his choice.

Agreed. It is the backup server which must contain the credentials of the live system and contact it for the backup, and not the other way around. Otherwise an attack on your live system will quickly turn into an attack on your backup system too.

Below the line, you have many employees to one vacancy. Above the line, you have many vacancies to one employee. Below the line, do not hope to talk your employer out of making you showing up at work with a red nose, dressed like a clown, and sitting not to far away from the boss, so that he can conveniently spit at you, when he is not just ignoring you. Above the line, you will have to slam the phone to recruiters, and "No, you cannot have a minute my time, okay?". The boss will pay up to half of your salary as a finder's fee just for someone to find you and talk you into coming over. In fact, above the line, you can just work from home too, so that you do not need to hear the boss begging to please not chuck and abandon him like a used-up girlfriend, with not even a verbal contract to fall back on. I have enough of using you, ok? I am using someone else now, alright? The whole point is that no amount of regulating will shift around the line. The situation below the line cannot be made better. It can only be made even worse.

Agreed about the array syntax too. They missed the ball in bash about nested arrays, because freeing them is indeed a non-trivial problem. Bash can happily operate with just simplistic malloc() and free() calls. Nesting arrays breaks that simplicity.

My personal opinion is that they should not have added such broken array implementation, but rather let the user load an external library to deal with it, through an external tool like ctypes.sh: https://github.com/taviso/ctypes.sh/wiki.

Not all programs need nested arrays. Adding support for them, comes with a price tag attached. By keeping it external, the user only pays for what he really uses.

Fundamentally it is more like tcl (function chaining) than like bash (process chaining), where process pipelining is the central operation, and where functions and programs are equivalent. In that sense, it has mostly the advantages but also the inconveniences of tcl, javascript and similar non-shell scripting languages. My opinion is that they have quite missed the ball in bash on non-nestable arrays when they introduced them quite recently, but besides that, bash is still pretty much my favourite tool.

Concerning "Data Science", the problem is that collecting data and conjecturing about what is going on, is not exactly science. You would need to experimentally test things, and look at that kind of data instead.

When practically doing it, remote work has its pluses and its cons. At the same time, for the organization, it still multiplies the pool of candidates by at least 50. So, you could certainly get better talent. I live across the globe in a country that is much cheaper than back home while my effective tax rate is zero. I work from coffee shops and from my flat. I don't see why I would ever go back to sitting in an office ...

Well, to the tune of $60,000 dollars/year, I wonder how much longer people are going to "become a more whole human being". There are cheap conjectures and ideologies, and then there are the really expensive ones!

What about pulling your own weight and produce something that other people would be willing to pay for? That may make sense too, no?

The article assumes that everybody has access to the same knowledge as to whether a startup will be successful or not. I do not believe this at all. Gambling on startups is much more riskier for outsiders than for insiders.

With software eating the world, I would not be too worried about that kind of problems. Furthermore, the opportunities for almost pure-software plays are increasing dramatically. Google and Facebook already are a pure-software play, but even Uber and Airbnb are too. It often just amounts to operating an internet platform in which one type of users wants to connect with another type. There are opportunities galore in that field, and the money is clearly raining out of the sky in these things. A good thing about them, is that in this kind of platforms, there is no point in having people around who know nothing about software. You can easily outsource all of that. I work for an internet platform myself, in which I also have shares. Only software really matters and makes a difference in our context. Yahoo-style "managerialism", "bean counting", and "maximizing shareholder value" would just crash and burn, because that is simply the nature of the beast.

Well, I always write a command line (CLI) program first, without worrying at all, about what kind of user interfaces (UI) I may do later on.

Frameworks do it the other way around. They generate a skeleton for a web user interface or a mobile app, and next, the real program gets unidentifiably shoehorned in.

There are so many different ways to call a program function: by the user, by one of your own scripts that does it in batch, by an external program through an API, through a web user interface, by a mobile app, by a desktop app, ...

Isn't the most stupid way of building a program, to shoehorn it into a web user interface? It pretty much guarantees that you will have to implement the same logic many times all over again. That kind of applications can never be consistent.

Furthermore, my CLI programs are trivially easy to containerize properly with tools like docker. How can you do that with a monolithic framework monster?

Well, this new incident will certainly help justifying new killings of policemen. It will make other people who were already close to the line, now cross it. In that sense, nothing comes for free.

As a libertarian, I certainly believe that these things should never come for free. I am now waiting for the news that at least half a dozen policemen were unceremoniously killed somewhere.

That really depends on the architecture of the software. There are thousands of people creating and maintaining device drivers for the linux kernel. The idea that only two people could do that simultaneously, is a bit far fetched when the architecture actually makes sense.

But then again, most commercial software does not have that kind of extensible architecture. Therefore, it is probably true that a commercial software team will never really scale.
