I use a self-hosted HackMD (now CodiMD) [1] instance for this. The hosted version pushes more and more towards account creation but you can start without account by visiting [2] directly.
They have real time collaboration and a long list of additional plugins [3] that allow all kinds of nice collaboration use cases.
For example it is possible to convert some bullet points into a presentation with minimal effort.

They provide good reasons for doing so [1]. I share your hope that "anything that has decent cryto and is not FAANG" will succeed and I would prefer it to be a federated system but I also see what moxie describes in the article.
Basically federation only works on a lowest common denominator. This means progress is very slow or impossible.
Comparing the current state of the Matrix ecosystem and Signal I find it a lot easier to convince friends and family to join Signal. After all, that is what makes a messenger useful.
When I decided to move away from Google Search I went with DDG for some time, since it seemed to be the more independent / open approach, compared to Startpage. I found myself switching back to Google way to often, for either performance and / or relevance of results. I then switched to Startpage and used it as primary search for well over a year - only switching back to google for image search.
I still feel like DDG would be the philosophical superior option and with !s in mind I will give it another try, to see how far it came.
I'd be interested in more concrete reasons to use DDG over Startpage. First thing that comes to my mind is that with Startpage, Google still "reads" your search queries, which might leak info. What else?

After watching the "Software Should be Perfect" video I looked around in his GitHub account [0] and found groovebasin. I realized that 3 years ago I was amazed by that same attitude in his "Quest to Build the Ultimate Music Player" [1]. I find it very hard to keep up that kind of purism in the corporate world. Even as a Co-Founder with a lot of decision-making authority, I often feel the need to favor pragmatism over purism.
Andy, I wish you the best of luck to succeed in your quest to sustain a living, while keeping up the perfectionism.
BTW: I happened to have crashed the groovebasin demo back in 2015. In an email you explained that my playlist import triggered an out of memory process crash. Maybe its time to rewrite the groovebasin backend in Zig to make it more robust in high memory usage situations ;)
