My theory is that this will un-block Apple from making an OS that runs the same apps on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. If they start to sell Macs with custom ARM processors, they could eliminate the feature gap between MacBooks and iPads, invest more into software quality and testing, and less into the "legacy" macOS 10.
The iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard is already basically a laptop, just with a crippled OS. It's not difficult to imagine incremental software updates that bring the OS closer to what you get on macOS.
