I think all this articles miss the point, sure early strongly type lang like Java were a chore
Current static typing is a lot better and bring a lot of benefits to the table without the oppressive feeling of early Java. Rust, Swift, C# even Typescript are excellent implementations of typed langs.
Exactly, I'm more annoyed about private institutions owning every single piece of my personal data (I'm looking at you google!) than an actual public institution
At least with government you have public representation
In my last consulting company the CTO decided every single project for now on must be an SPA with a de-coupled back end, that is a mandate (rather idiotic if you ask me).
We had relatively simple projects that could be done in a couple of weeks with a traditional MVC framework, bloated to multi men teams working for months.
But hey I guess over-engineering translates to man hours, man hours translate to revenue.

On point, as someone who has written both native and web apps. it really comes down to execution. Elitism aside, Web based apps can work for some scenarios
