Great to see this! I have two Framework Desktops running with CachyOS, for AI workloads, software development and light gaming. Great machines! I wish the header for the power button and LEDs was rotated 180 degrees so the NanoKVM doesn’t need extra cable adapters.

Our daughter absolutely loves her Yoto Mini. We have a hundred or so cards, half of them were blank cards that we print and tape pictures on based on the content. This is probably the best purchase we made for long car rides and flights or just a lazy afternoon on the couch.

Fair point! I agree. The NAS sits in a corner with no airflow/ventilation and there is no AC here. In the corner it does get 95F-105F in late summer and I did not want to take the risk of it getting too hot.

Yes, it is a cheaply built wooden house, as is typical in Southern California, from the 70s. The backside of the house is directly at the back alley, where the trash bins and through traffic are (see [1] for an example). The NAS is maybe 4m away from the trash bins.

I was about to order that GMKtek G9 and then saw Jeff's video about it on the same day. All those issues, even with the later fixes he showed, are a big no-no for me. Instead, I went with a Odroid H4-Ultra with an Intel N305, 48GB Crucial DDR5 and 4x4TB Samsung 990 Evo SSDs (low-power usage) + a 2TB SATA SSD to boot from. Yes, the SSDs are way overkill and pretty expensive at $239 per Samsung 990 Evo (got them with a deal at Amazon). It's running TrueNAS. I am somewhat space-limited with this system, didn't want spinning disks (as the whole house slightly shakes when pickup or trash trucks pass by), wanted a fun project and I also wanted to go as small as possible.

No issues so far. The system is completely stable. Though, I did add a separate fan at the bottom of the Odroid case to help cool the NVMe SSDs. Even with the single lane of PCIe, the 2.5gbit/s networking gets maxed out. Maybe I could try bonding the 2 networking ports but I don't have any client devices that could use it.

I had an eye on the Beelink ME Mini too, but I don't think the NVMe disks are sufficiently cooled under load, especially on the outer side of the disks.

I am interested in a productized version - but only with x64 boards like the Steam Deck or one of the Framework mainboards. I don't want to deal with 3D printing and all that. The latter are larger than the Steam Deck, though. No battery for me though: I would use it after work, when I am near an outlet anyway.

Thank you very much for sharing the files and your experience! I just got my first XR glasses, Xreal One Pro, and had your link bookmarked to do something similar. I am very impressed with these glasses. Looking through ifixit I can't find the Steam Deck's mainboard. Where did you find it?

I am also very interested in AMD's Strix Halo for running LLMs locally. For that I have a Framework Desktop in order (batch 1!). Alex Ziskind on Youtube does videos comparing Strix Halo, M4 Mac mini and MacBook Pro, Nvidia 5090, etc. including power consumption. The only downside is one has to pull out the numbers from the videos, there's no tables or anything. The 96GB is the maximum on Windows. On Linux, you can allocate 110GB.

Where can I find those mini-PCs? The HP Z2 Mini G1a is "Coming Soon". If this is to be believed: "2025年5月以降販売開始予定", which translate to "Sales scheduled to start after May 2025" That is Q2 2025 - at the earliest.

I haven't found any other with a committed release/ship date.

Looking at the two GMKtec systems with their rattling fans I have here, I would rather take the Framework system where I can easily swap the fan. Cooling those 100-120W will take space and air flow.
