Anecdotal thought: I have noticed that I feel angry after eating bread. Sounds goofy, but I realized that it wasn't the caffeine from coffee and it wasn't me "not being a morning person". Recognizing this has helped my relationships a surprising amount.
I'm just going to leave a PeerTube link here as I think it is a better example of a decentralized youtube. https://joinpeertube.org/
BitChute annoys me because the video streaming is decentralized through bittorrent tech, but the repository of videos is totally dependent and centralized with BitChute.
>This allows Telegram to be widely adopted in broad circles, not just by activists and dissidents, so that the simple fact of using Telegram does not mark users as targets for heightened surveillance in certain countries. We are convinced that the separation of conversations into Cloud and Secret chats represents the most secure solution currently possible for a massively popular messaging application.
>people using these apps can be targeted by governments as those who have something to hide. Due to the limited distribution of such apps, the government can identify and track individuals whose phones connect to the corresponding IP addresses. This is something that is already happening in case of tools like Tor, and, to a lesser extent, of some messaging apps. Yasha Levine is publishing a brilliant investigation about it.
Wordpress seems to be objectively bloated and messy in terms of the website code that is generated. You can run wordpress blogs through a website speed analyzer and compare it with a static gen site and see this.
What I meant by “leave the reservation” was that Gab as a company was not in line or subservient to the big companies (Google, Facebook, Apple). Apple banned their app a long time ago even. I believe this sets a precedent for other smaller companies that also do not fall in line. We’ve seen this many times now. Getting deplatformed is a scary thing and it only happens to those that don’t fall into line. You never see extremists on the left that call for violence against conservatives get deplatformed. What we're seeing is one platform being taken down because they were vocally in support of free speech, which the others are not.
Gab had a lot of bad apples, yes. Their moderation could have been a lot better. I’m not even sure what their moderation was. I thought they didn’t allow for calls of violence on their platform actually. But I guarantee if we count the amount of calls for violence on Twitter, it will be vastly higher than Gab. But I digress.
How long until Mastodon apps are taken out of app stores just because some bad people have Mastodon servers?
Check out Nim. They recently added support for a function declaration in addition to a proc. Function automatically checks that it is a pure function with no side effects.
Considering the flexibility of the language as a whole, this is really cool!
There is at least one[0] company providing mastodon hosting as a service. There really should be more though. The more Mastodon becomes compliant with Activity Pub, the more you could potentially replace all social media with it. Then both email and social media would be properly federated.
I agree that the Jones' wouldn't want to be hosted by the Smith's instance. But I can forsee something like a local co-op managing an instance for all neighbors. But personally, I'd rather just pay a company that I know is subject to various laws and consumer agreements, etc.
I recently joined Twitter and I have to agree that Retweets are the most cancerous part.
Accounts with many followers act like schoolyard bullies with their gang of yes men.
I still see federation as being too niche, but it doesn't have to be that way! I think in an ideal situation, federated servers would rely more on physical location than on deviant niche hobbies or addictions.
The Smith family should have a server (or your neighborhood should) rather than cyberpunk.furry.foxes. Because the reality is that people are more than just one thing and the concept breaks down when you start discussing action movies or cryptography on your @[email protected] account.
I think secure-scuttlebutt goes for more of the real world location-based server concept a bit. But I think most people prefer the peace of mind of some kind of administration being possible if needed.
