It's referring to the velocity dispersion of the cloud. If you imagine the cloud is rotating about a central axis, the parts of the cloud spinning toward us will have a higher relative velocity than those spinning away. The spread of these velocities is the velocity dispersion.
A broad velocity width then indicates that parts of the cloud are moving rapidly compared to others, as one might observe if the cloud was being accreted by a black hole - the material closest the black hole would be travelling much faster than that at the edge of the cloud.
No pressure, scientists, but if you could perfect this technique before I go totally blind, that'd be great. Not even looking for vision restoration (though that'd be great), just a halt ot the degradation ...
Wow. Everything in this article was new to me. Short but good read overall.
If they're having this great of advances in this short of time, they should be able to have continuous gliders in the next decade I'd assume.
Most browsers these days treat RAM like it's an infinite source. Just because RAM is cheap doesn't mean a simple no-nonsense website should gobble up 200MB of RAM!
Any context on the why of those blocks? I've heard some of the news of the situation in Turkey lately, but the article does not talks about why would they block those services now...
First Mercedes decided they'll be the leader in EVs, then Boeing decides they'll be first to Mars. How will Elon Musk's companies cope with so much imaginary competition?
On that note, I've decided I'm going to be a billionaire. I don't know why more people don't choose that.
Content marketing has changed, and it is all about the story. You must rethink the way you craft your content. Establish and illustrate your company’s values and worldview while delivering value to your readers.
Wouldn't having the fingerprint scanner on the back be annoying sometimes? For example, when your phone is just laying on the table and you want to quickly unlock it without picking it up.
Wow, that has my story beat. A few weeks ago I was shopping at a football (soccer) gear shop and the man running it rang me up on a computer he’s had since 1994. I want to say it was a Packard Bell, but I’m not sure about that. He had to manually type in the product code of each item I bought, and then printed out a receipt on a dot-matrix printer. Then he swiped my credit card on his iPhone to complete the transaction.
Almost as good as human translators at getting the basic meaning right and putting words in the right order, for similar language pairs, translating wikipedia articles.
The skill of human translators isn't based on getting the information right, that's a given. The difference between a good and a bad translator is how well they capture the thoughts and intent of the speaker, whether they can make their audience feel the same way as the original did.
I say it every time one of these articles comes up, a machine capable of universal translation will be none other than a true AI.
Bloody typical of the US. They get permission for a climate monitoring station and construct a military base instead, leaving tons of toxic waste behind with no thought for the people who live there. I hope Greenland is able to secure from the US government all the hundreds of millions of dollars necessary to clean up their mess.
