The shelter in place orders started off completely voluntary. People ignored them. And it escalated. People continued to ignore and the policies continued to escalate. We didn’t go from zero to where we are now. People caused this.
It’s too bad that people can’t follow simple requests. Governments are forced to choose between allowing idiot citizens to destroy society or to implement draconian policies.
Medical professionals are being asked to come out of retirement. Nurses are reusing PPE for weeks. Medical students are graduating early to help.
The rest of us are being asked to just stay the fuck home for a few weeks.
And we just refuse to do it. Absolutely refuse. Everyone is suddenly and avid walker. So then governments have to choose whether to let idiot citizens ruin everything... or not.
I don’t blame governments. I blame all you idiots who won’t stop going outside.
I guess I am in the minority because as soon as I see a shipping fee more than 7-10% of the cost of the item I immediately start looking elsewhere. Numerous times I've just decided to not buy an item because I didn't want to pay the shipping costs.
It's a real stretch to suggest that Apple is a monopoly because they control their own platform. By that definition anyone who has a closed platform is operating a monopoly. Is Netflix a monopoly? Fiverr?
One of the principles of competition law is prevent a company from abusing a dominant position or to prevent a company from obtaining a dominant position through abuse. Apple does not have a dominant position.
I had a similar experience except it was Google. Google outright killed the app and punished our developer account while Apple happily let it continue.
We tried distributing the apk and going through Amazon but it was fruitless. So now it’s just iOS and we have to explain why over and over and over again.
> To be sure, the congressional relief package includes $350 billion in help for small businesses, but the program is complex, limited in scope and only a fraction of eligible businesses are likely to use it.
That is absolutely untrue. The payroll protection loans cover 2.5 times average monthly salaries. It is easy to apply and virtually every company under 500 employees WILL eventually apply. I applied on Friday and I know many many others who did the same.
And that isn’t even the only relief that was provided. There are also disaster loans available that go up to $200k before requiring owners to liquidate.
The normal loan requirements have been completely thrown out the window.
But there is also a perverse incentive going on right now because of the expansion of unemployment. We have already had one employee quit to take an unemployment raise. The Senators who raised concerns about this were right. Unemployment payouts should have been capped at whatever the previous income was.
And there is a perverse incentive from the business side, too. The law doesn’t require no layoffs so some businesses are laying off employees and hiring more talented people at depressed rates. They only have to have the same number of employees not the same employees.
You don’t need to worry about people under 30. Every older generation thinks every younger generation isn’t going to handle things well. And every single time, they are wrong.
You can take people to mean whatever you want. Behind those algorithms and big funds are people pulling the strings. At the end of the day the market is a reflection of where things will go.
The stock market is just a collection of people betting on where they think things are going. The market declined 25-30% because people were predicting a downturn. Now we’re in that downturn.
The reason the market didn’t tank today is because this jobs report was already priced in.
Yeah I understand the distinction but the weekly numbers capture much of the same information and are more accurate. The monthly survey is just something we do because we’ve done it for a long time.
The safety net has never been more robust than right now. With the additional $600/week through the end of July people can expect to receive an annualized amount of nearly $60,000. Add on to that food and other benefits and people who were laid off should not be struggling.
