We used to have social logins but we ditched them for now, people want to chat pseudonymously. I would like to do the name only signup at some point. We currently use email to do:
* password recovery
* send people a summary about who got in after they have left the community
Ideally we would let people opt in to that last part. Then all we need is a way to secure access to your nick.
Hi, I always like to read user feedback, especially if they make me smile. I created yc.metachat.com with 2 friends as a side project.
We applied to YCW18 and wanted something that aggregated news about it and gave us the opportunity to chat with other people who have applied. If you would login, you would see there is quite some activity. I'm sure there are many areas of improvement to be found.
To come back to your list of critiques: 1) We are not affiliated with YC, nor do we claim to be. @vinaipay already pointed out your misunderstanding about the company's domain owner. 2) Registration is a standard Laravel component that hashes your password. 3) We are loading external images from rss feeds which are not over https. Maybe that is what you are referring to.
Things we will do: 1) We are putting a disclaimer on the website that we are not affiliated with YC 2) When and if this side project becomes something more than a side project, we will invest time and money to store the images and send them to you over https
Note: I was tempted to write this entire post in all caps :)

Facebook News has become more of an RSS reader for all of the pages I've ever liked (or a personalized advertisement reader). They have banned updates from friends to the top right corner on desktop and it has disappeared from mobile. This is unless the content is "engaging" enough. The other screen/time real estate is being used to show as much of their paying customer's content as possible.
The advertising business model works in contradiction to finding the most relevant content for you. I've unliked every page to get the most stripped down version of my feed possible.
-> this has no affiliation with ycombinator, it's just a chat, set up by some enthusiasts who like to build things
