Any experience can alter your perception of reality, it doens't change reality. That doesn't mean it can't be a problem that needs to be addressed. It can also be a benefit and help people experience situations that would be dangerous to experience in real life so they get the skills to deal with them without being in danger. Think airline pilots practicing airplane failures in a simulator. The professional airplane simulators are so detailed, it really looks and feels like being in a plane.

Did the person that created "Moneyball" understand baseball? Would you expect someone to be able to leverage those concepts without understanding what they mean or the insight in how to interpret what they say about the player?

This is a similar thing. If you have the ability to understand how to interpret the metrics, the metrics can be useful. If you can't interpret the metrics, you will use them poorly and the result will not be a better organization.

SGIs were the first Unix systems I used. We had a lab of them in school. They worked wonderfully for me and I never lost any files on them. There was also a really good Unix Sysadmin that maintained them and was available if you had any questions.
