A reason for Airbnb I’m not seeing in the other comments: traveling with a dog is much easier with Airbnb than a hotel. I can find a fenced backyard and also have lots of indoor space.
I also choose airbnbs for cooking. We almost always choose a place with a grill, since our apartment doesn’t have one, and often a fire pit, too.
> you might see "the last quarter of the second millennium BC", which means minus 2000 to about minus 1750.
From comparing some online answers (see links), I'd conclude that even though the numbers are ordered backward, "first"/"last"/"early"/"late" would more commonly be understood to reference the years' relative position in a timeline. That is, "2000 to about minus 1750" would be the first quarter of the second millennium BC.
I don’t really buy the comparison entirely. Presumably the sports boss is doing something patently illegal, and obviously there are alternative career paths. OP is working in academia, which is socially acceptable, and feels that this is what is normal in their academic field, necessary for their goals, and isn’t actively harmful.
I wouldn’t necessarily condone the behavior, but what would you do in the situation? To always whistleblow whenever something doesn’t feel right and risk the politics? To quit working in the field if your concerns aren’t heard? To never cite papers that have absolutely any errors? I think it’s a tough situation and not productive to say OP isn’t behaving morally.
That’s surprising to hear. I’ve found P&V’s Dostoevsky translations very readable, and my understanding from reading reviews online was that P&V’s translations are well regarded in general.
Which translation did you read/would you recommend?
Edit: I did some reading online and found some criticism of P&V, such as:
I agree on all points, but are restrictions on internal travel much different from restrictions on external travel? Seems to depend on the definition of the boundaries, and I think it’s hard to quantify the relative costs of external/internal travel restrictions. So I’m not sure what we lose by also restricting “external” travel other than another level of inconvenience.
