Legalize and regulate to what extent? Most drugs are certainly not victimless.

Wait until you see the Windows 11 “widgets”. It’s basically doom scrolling as a non-optional feature.

I don’t work in tech (and my question here will prove that) but how does a company lay off 10,000 people without seriously harming their product or ceasing products all together? Is tech that bloated? What are people doing all day where it’s realistic to lay of 10,000 people?

Dang said he’d do it at one point and then it was never done. I desperately want it for reading in bed (iOS). Some day…

Yes. The biggest companies, with the most political power, believe just that. I pray smaller companies make themselves more competitive by offering WFH but that’s yet to be seen.

I must laugh that Microsoft adopted Google’s work and then leveraged it against them with such force.

How would MSFT react if Google injected a “GOOGLE DOCS IS FREE AND BETTER!” banner on Microsoft365 pages loaded in Chrome? Disgusting tactic.

I don’t work in tech so forgive the ignorance. How is the communication at the DoD (especially the SF-86) not encrypted and why it is sitting on an email server?

+1 for FreeTaxUSA. Simple software, reasonable rates, no dark patterns (that I’ve seen). However, with the slush fund that the government has, I don’t see why they can’t make their own.

uBlock Origin Lite has been a good solution this far. It might not be as robust as uBlock Origin, but I fear less for the future that it’s here.

Amazon kept their war ship moving forward during WFH. Clearly, middle-manager body language/communication/likability doesn’t add real value.

Adapt or die, as they say.

3 days is to limit the shock. Then, it’ll be “we have got so much positive feedback, productivity has skyrocketed, we all need to come back full time”.

> Bailout? Why? Because it's not just these "rich" landlords/investors that lose their money. They are pension funds, retirement funds, Teachers retirement funds, public service funds, your neighbors' annuity, etc.

Moral hazard.

Force bankruptcy and use any “bail out” to help the investors named above.

I don’t agree and think it’s dangerous advice. You should give people a second chance - depending on the severity of the first chance, of course.

Loss of privacy. I wouldn’t want a third-party knowing I purchased certain medications (even some that are sold OTC).

The online community must: 1. Have a clear purpose supported by strong moderation 2. Have no public-facing reputation features (eg, likes, friends, etc.)

Over time, all are doomed. Right now, HN is the best. For the most part, HN is filled with intelligent people that offer insightful comments and accept challenging positions.

However, there’s been a noticeable uptick of memes/puns/jokes that degrade the experience. Those who oppose of the jokes? Downvoted, barely visible.

This is how it starts but of course people think “oh lighten up, we’re just kidding around here!” Next thing you know, baby pictures are being posted on the front page.

I imagine they’re resolve those realities the same way we do: “Start negotiating or prepare to lose thousands/millions”

“I want to believe” is the saying! You hit the nail on the head. Is it aliens? No. But I enjoy entertaining the theory that it might be. It’s harmless and adds mystery and excitement to my world. If you were young in the 90s, I’m sure you can remember the wonder that everyone seemed to have. I’m only sad that Art Bell isn’t here to speculate with us.
