Guys, "The Birth & Death of JavaScript" was supposed to be a joke. In all seriousness though, I'm beginning to get tired of webdevs reading OS books and going "oh, this would be a great addition to The Web™". Slap "in the browser" after a feature all operating systems have supported for decades and you'll hit the front page of HN in no time. What's old is new again and all that.
I recall several European nations switching government systems over to Linux only to have Microsoft worm their way back in a few years later. Let's hope it's permanent this time.
As much as I dislike using a proprietary chat app, Discord is well designed and easy to use. Reliving the early internet is great and all but my time is limited, and I'm sick of sacrificing my time and sanity faffing around with bouncers and garbage IRC clients. It's the same reason I use macOS instead of Linux. I don't just want a Unix environment, I want a polished Unix environment where apps don't have Linux UI syndrome and plugging in an external monitor doesn't require me to pull up the man page for xrandr. That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
Can we please stop with the clickbait scientific discoveries? They all follow the same formula of: 'x develops y which can "z"'. Where "z", which is always in quotes, is a gross sensationalization of some discovery or effect.
An Electron flame war seems inevitable. It's fine for quick cross platform support but it absolutely screws over the user. QT is far from perfect but at least it's native.
I currently have a subscription to 1Password, I have no problems paying for a good service that's well designed, implemented and secure. That being said, I am a student so every dollar counts. Does anyone have experience switching from 1Pass to Bitwarden?
That's rich, so pattern identification is bigotry now? The suffix "phobic" refers to an irrational fear. Nothing about his comment was indicative of irrationality.
Heuristics like this are important because humans are not machines. If you run into a warning in one of these situations, they are usually rectified by changing the statement slightly. Worst case scenario you can #pragma push and pop the warning.
Japan and small parts of Europe not run by the EU are probably the only places left in the world that realize that as soon as you open the doors to mass immigration, you turn into America. A country with no identity and values apart from consumerism.
I have been noticing an uptick in pro Microsoft propaganda on Hacker News. Does Microsoft seriously think developers opinions can be swayed by some lip service after almost 3 decades of abuse?
