It’s not clear to me based on the article how the 12 kids paid for college themselves in this situation. Did the parents co-sign the loans for student debt? Did the government offer financial aid? Were the kids forced to work full time on their own until they could pay for tuition?
With the increasing in income inequality, I don’t think a story like this will have a happy ending in the future. Those kids who will access to financial support, such as a paid for college education and time to focus on studies rather than chores will have an edge over those who don’t. Sure, many of those kids will be spoiled and not learn the value of hard work and flame out, but enough of them will be able to utilize that advantage that people in this situation will not be able to compete for the limited number of middle class jobs available.
In increasing digital world, where do you draw the line between a healthy hobby versus an addiction? From the article, it seems like you would like to stop people from video games altogether versus curtailing their addiction to healthier levels. Organizations such as MADD have faced similar problems where they started as a way to rehabilitate people, but turned into organizations with an extremist agenda.
The old-fashioned method you are suggesting requires much more effort than Silicon Valley parties that are currently being thrown. Changing who you are as a person is tough, and why do that when there are easier options. In places like SV and Seattle where there is an imbalance between men/women, you could follow these instructions perfectly but you would still be playing with bad odds.
There was recently an article about a prostitution ring busted in Seattle involving Amazon/Microsoft employees, which just shows these type of situations are inevitable in male-dominated industries, and wealth just exasperates the issue.

When I read your comment, I thought the reason Stockfish won was because the computer found an innovative tactic that a human would not see.
Watching the game, it looks like if there was a human player instead of the Houdini computer, the human would be easily able to force the game into a draw instead of a loss.
Nonetheless, as an intermediate chess player, the games were fun to watch because of how different the play style computers can sometimes have versus humans.
